    Hi,

Usually I can fix my PC probs myself, not this time

    I have 2 NIC's in a desktop box. 1 onboard & 1 PCI

My first question is - If I have 2 NIC's both enabled, and I send a PING command, which NIC is sending the packet ?

1 is hooked up to my router for net access and gets an IP from it (at the moment 192.168.1.100)

The 2nd I have given a static IP (192.168.0.25) to connect to another device - a programmable cable box, (IP:192.168.0.24)

When I connect the 2nd NIC to this device it will not connect. Pinging it gives "Hardware Error"

I have verified all hardware is working, the NIC can be pinged itself as can the other NIC & router. The other LAN device & cable has been tested using another laptop.

Can some clever chap explain how 2 NIC's can be used in this type of setup ?

    cheers

put a switch between the pc and cable box or a crossover cable.

So, simply change the straight ethernet cable for a crossover ?

The when I do a PING what NIC will send the packet ?

    cheers

I would also check crossover/straight cable - not all devices can coop with both and "autoswitch".

Then activate/deactivate the cards - one by one - until you find a working combination...

    ...unlikely but test your cables...

Somebody told me adding an entry in the routing table would do the trick.

    Seems not. still stuck
