I have original download from MSDN of the R2 retail iso. I can use VL keys in this iso, so what's the real difference (if any) between this two isos?

You will notice an ei.cfg file in the VL iso (in sources folder), not in retail :)

Only difference is that VL comes preinstalled with GVLK.

100% incorrect. I installed several servers with gvlk before VL media was available.

How then do you explain my 2012R2 machines which I installed from the WZT (retail) media using the GVLK and activated against my KMS, before the VL media was released?

Only channels are differences and Rollup 1 integrated in VL ISO, nothing more.

There is no such thing called "VL" Keys for 2012 R2 Products. It should be called MAK/KMS or Retail Key.

Retail ISO is for MSDN / Technet Subscribers with Retail Key.
VL ISO is for VLSC Customers w/ MAK/KMS Key.

There is no difference but only the place where it is going to be used.

    Thanks
