    Nice to see lost threads revived.

    The methods described will achieve the purpose specified. But if we formulate the objective more broadly to getting a better paint tool, then third party freeware will do a lot more. I only mention the example of Paint.net which was originally intended as replacement to Paint with its development sponsored by Microsoft, but changed course. And there are many others.
