I've approved the thread as it looks very interesting and a project such as this would address many issues people have with Metro. I'd be curious to know if the same thing could be done with a leaked Windows 8 editions explorer, before the start menus code was removed. It could end up working better than Windows 7's
Interesting for the people who dislike Metro. I will test tomorrow in a virtual machine, I keep the Metro on my host OS. @Daz For that do I think the explorer.exe of the developer preview would be best, this one still depends on the shsxs.dll. Once that file is gone will the developer preview turn back into Windows 7 interface.
That would work if it was the last build to have it. I'm just thinking if it'd be a little more compatible, although it may then have bugs of it's own.
I like this idea, maybe using the WDP explorer, the user can toggle between metro and no-metro by a simple registry tweak.
Where can I find on the install DVD explorer.exe.mui and explorer.exe x64? Currently I have installed Win7 on computer
My bad, didn't have Explorer.exe.mui in Windows\en-EN working great now...thanks! I get black screen after installing. I have to ctrl-alt-del and run the task manager then select run and enter explorer to get the desktop.
Won't win many things. Metro in DP/RP is quite different. In sources\install.wim, open with latest 7-zip beta. That happens if mui file is not in proper subdir. It has to be "en-US" or your language (de-DE or ru-RU for example). Doesn't work now, likely will be in next version. Alt-F4 on desktop for now.
it might not win anything for Metro, but would it not fix these issues - Start menu pin list and MFU list doesn't work. Instead, Start menu always shows "All programs" list. - Trying to pin app to start menu by drag&drop will pin it to taskbar instead. - Choosing "Pin to Start" menu item will add item to Start menu All programs list. - Network icon popups don't show since Metro UI isn't started. - You can't manage Wi-Fi networks. Use third-party program for that. - You can't manage VPN/dialup connections. Run rasphone for that. - You can't add new user. Run control userpasswords2 for that but great work anyway, lets hope that by RTM or GA we can add this to install.wim and forget about Metro BS for good
