Just tried to check for updates and it's been checking for updates for 10 minutes now even though I have all updates installed already.
I made a fresh Win7 SP1 install yesterday, no problems with update speed or checking for new updates. Maybe try WSUSoffline or some other update client.
Why am I not supprised to see this? The best way to get people to upgrade to the latest version of a product is to stop support of the older product. Or, to make the support untrustable to the point of uselessness. IMHO, With regard to Windows 7, Windows update is no longer useable nor can it be trusted. Eventually, we will be forced to rely on private repositories for Windows 7 updates. Grab them now. They will eventually become a precious commodity.
Even if the monthly update would take like 8 hours - I am going to stay with 7. Windows 10 has nothing to offer which is better then with 7 beside DX12. As soon as my new SSD arrives Linux Mint will be my main OS anyways. Or maybe I will free my Amiga out of his wardrobe prison, but cleaning dust of two decades...
On my laptop with 32-bit Home Premium 7 it can take up to 15 minutes to check for updates but on my desktop 64-bit Ultimate 7 it takes around 10-15 seconds and it's been always like that.
Yep, i first noticed this im May, around the time they released GWX and the reservation promo Sneaky msft Win7's WU have been too messy anyway.. for a long time before Win10 power to the LDR branch
Microsoft will be spewing garbage into Windows 7 until you switch to the other garbage Windows 10. So hang on for the ride and don't look down.
i think it is not a server issue. when you click the update button it continuously reads from and writes to hard drive. also cpu usage is very high. so it hink it is completely related with some updates.
It's actually WU-side issue yes, the process will take resources to download identification files and check current/messing updates, merge info and update DataStore.edb file afterwards, the svchost process (holding wuauserv service) will hang on 50% cpu for a period of time this period varies depending on how much updates will be offered/shown in WU i.e. if fresh install with no updates, the period can last an hour or more if few updates will be offered, it may last 5 minutes or so i had this experience on different installs, PC, Laptop, VM.. Fresh, integrated updates..

I have the same problem. Update will go in endless loop. I suspect it's related to windows 10 being pre downloaded.
i have tried this with a fully updated image. the scan took more than 30 minutes. after that only windows 10 updates were offered
After a lot of frustration these last two weeks Windows Update seems to be working properly if a little slow. Just updated two fresh installs with 100+ updates
Id like to concur to this WU issue as well, even now. I have had a look at at least a dozen peoples laptops that Ive reformatted and installed myself this week, as well as half a dozen who are still running the OOB 7 from when they purchased it. All the complaints were the typical "Its running slow." Some of these are old 4gb Pentiums while some were newer i3/i5. On every single one svchost (wuasa) was draining no less than 1.5gb of RAM and over 50% of CPU. On one 8gb i5 it had consumed 2.6gb of RAM. After 30mins for the i5s and over an hour for the < i3s WU completed searching and found TWO updates. Ive since turned off automatic updates think Im gonna look at the pack fro them and do semi regular offline install for them.
