I have a machine I was testing 8.1 Preview/RTM and it is not yet activated.

However, I have a legitimate personal key from an academic(MSDNAA/DreamSpark) program for windows 8.1 Professional.

What should I do? Use the key directly? (it doesn't seem to be accepted). Just install over it? Clean install?

I'd like to keep settings and software

    Oh nice, excellent, +thanks

I know it's not spectacularly important, but I generally hate "totally clean installs", I have tons of personal settings.

I have no full confirmation yet, but it appears to work.

By using the Academic setup.exe directly (without the updown utility) it seems to go through, but there is no offer to keep settings, only files.

With updown it gives the option to give settings as well, and goes through.

edit: It went fully up to the 'installing 1%.." full screen. So far so good.

edit: Hrm, it's faster than before. I guess it detects files it already has.
