I'm trying to help out someone which update goes right till the moment he should connect to his Microsoft account, it hangs right there for hours, no other solution than leaving.
    Any clues ?

Dude, some common sense will be good including Operating system actually installed on system, how it is activated, pc specs, drivers are up to date or not, graphic cards,Anti virus installed or not? if so which? ...and what are you upgrading to and how,

HP Pavilion TouchSmart 14-b160ef Ultrabook , upgrading from windows 8 store on a windows 8.0 x64 legit, every driver or software up to date, all HP crapware installed and up to date, antivirus NIS 6, no peripherals connected, upgraded on wifi then ethernet with same result.
hope it's enough common sense in respect of my knowledge
    thanks for your patience

disable AV crap and try again. If this is the way to get the files, uninstall that NIS crap with NIS removal tool to get totally rid of it

    Good job this time Potjevleesh:
Try and disable that NIS6 as the Doc said, and report back

I finally succeeded, I have now an error message about "catalyst control center" which can't run, I downloaded the latest ATI beta driver pack here: support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/latest-catalyst-windows-beta, the install aborted with a message saying it can't find corresponding hardware...
could it be due to the hybrid intel/ATI contraption again ? any solution ?

uninstall ati , download latest 13.1
if not, just go to device manager, and toll back to native winodws driver for now

use this tool to uninstall, reboot
then reinstall 13.9 , that is the latest whql driver,
report back. You can always use windows native driver to get going then troubleshoot, also what is your exact graphic card?
