I have 2 Laptops, one with vista the other Win 7.

The Win 7 Laptop works but the HDD is going bad
The Vista laptop is dead but the HDD is good....

    Soooo....

I Ghosted the Win 7 partition in the working computer to my desk top Computer.
Took the Vista HDD out of the dead laptop and placed it in the working (win 7)
    laptop replacing the failing HDD.

I then added a second partition on the vista drive.
Vista on C drive and the new partition was g.
I made the partition primary and active.

I then recovered the Ghosted Win 7 image from my desk top back to drive G.

When I rebooted, it had a duel boot menu and Win 7 works fine.
The problem is when Vista boots, it shows the preparing your desktop icon, plays
the opening music, but NO DESKTOP. Nothing but a mouse cursor on a blue screen.
The Windows key does nothing. Ctrl-Alt-dlt will bring up the task manager, but I
    cant do anything with it.

After the reboot I did notice that Win 7 now lives on C and G changed to D and thats
    where Vista lives now.
Its almost like Vista Is looking for all its desk top support file on C where it
    used to live.

Any one have any ideas on how to get my Vista desktop back?
