For me worked in the following circumstances:
    1. Windows XP MCE SP3
    2. wi-fi drivers installed
    3. Scientific Atlanta Passworded Rooter (my own)
    4. Excelent wi-fi signal
Let me show u how to do it:
    1. Go to Control Panel - Network Connections
    2. Right click on Wireless Networc Connection and select Properties
    3. Go to Wireless network tab and under prefered networks click add
    4. Now scan for wireless connections and see which one has a better signal (maximum signal recomanded)
    5. Type the network name as it is (with uppercase and lowercase)
    6. Change Network Autentification to be Open if it doesn't
    7. Choose under Data Encription: Disabled
    8. Check "the key is provided for me automaticaly"
    9. Go to Connection tab and check "connect when this network is in range"
    10. Press ok and wait your pc to connect to network (maybe requires reboot in some cases)
After you are connected you will have acces to the network with a minimal speed and without beeing noticed

I found out that I had 2 networks on the same rooter, one protected and one unprotected, so I tryed to change my wifi network password, and when I set up I found that there was a check box like this: password prompt : 1. optional 2.required so I checked required and the unprotected network gone
