Got an Acer 5315 laptop running Vista.
Turned it on the other day and the ACER screen loaded and it asked to start Windows normally which I tried but screen went blank (all fans running normal etc).
Turned off and tried last known good startup but done the same thing.
Can boot to BIOS with F2.

Thought the problem could be the hard drive so I bought a new one but does the same thing?
Tried an XP install disk and it reads it OK but then reports that no hard disc found.
Do you think the motherboard might have gone as it is not seeing the Hard disc?
    Thanks,Tony.

If the hard drive is sata you probably need to use 3rd party RAID drivers (it says press F6 to lad 3rd party RAID drivers before the XP install screen first laods) for an xp install to recognise the hard drive for use. If you tried installing Vista or 7 it would pick it up automatically though.

Try a boot disc like UBC4win and run HDD diagnostics tests

Go into the BIOS and change the hard drive mode from AHCI to IDE that will allow you to install XP without needing a floppy AHCI driver at F6 on your new HDD.

Run a HDD diagnostic on the old drive.

tried the suggestions and worked with me changing to IDE on F2 with the new hard drive....XP loading as I speak.
Had to thank both comments cause you guys are awesome!!

Any ideas what could be the problem with the old drive?
Should I retry it when I have loaded XP on the ne HDD?
Any way to retrieve info from HDD?
    Thank you again,Tony
