Which one is best for Windows 8.1 Pro? I can get Acronis for $10 cheaper than Macrium. Can't use the free version because I need to do weekly incremental backups
Bear in mind that Macrium Reflect Free even has GPT disk support while Acronis doesn't unless you pay more for the Add-on pack, and even with the add-on pack, I was able to create the backup partition but was never successful in restoring it using Acronis True Image 2013. Furthermore, Acronis has become bloated with cloud storage services and crap like that which I only disable to free up resources as they are useless, with that said, it isn't worth any money anymore even though I was a big supporter and user of Acronis True Image 2011. For once in my life I have found a program that is better than the paid solutions out there.
I believe the question is: Was that information necessary? I think not, i have no ill feeling whatsoever. Life goes on. Good thing , u still can get windows drivers for free, just no guarantee they will work.
On topic .. I don't install the recovery/backup solution but rather use the portable version .. Acronis 2013 plus boot disk allows me to image anything I have thrown at it ( W8 and 2012 server) + incremental backup + the ability to delete any image or incremental backup from my backup archive I choose .. I choose to manually do weekly backups .. Never had this software fail to image/backup and restore and Ian87 for the record the biggest waste of time for me in the last 2 months was reading the 12 closed threads you started ..
For once you actually said something sane. Agree 100%. Acronis is bloated s**t and they were the last one with GPT support, and they still have no x64 version of TI.
Acronis works fine on Windows 8.1 but there is still a bug with the Bootable Media. They will launch an update after Windows 8.1 has been launched.
What is the bug you are talking about ? I'm using the acronis 2014 bootable media and it is working fine BTW acronis 2014 without plus pack does the trick with uefi boot GPT partition just tried it out but you have to uncheck mbr recovery
Also, I sometimes look at it like this: The basic functions of Acronis (and others) have been the same for years and years, so there's hardly any need for new versions (only slight updates here and there). Telling the users they need to buy a new version every year (True Image 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014) is probably fueled by the marketing department, and the "poor" developers have to add tons of (unneeded) stuff, just to justify a new version. "Now with added SCMODS, uses less SLURM".
Paid version of reflect will build a pe disk for you. No reason to run from within windows. Also, in my experience the disk works on every PC I have tried with the exception of networking drivers.
