I just put a modem into a brand new computer but it is not being recognized in device manager. Why would that be? thx PS... i tried clicking on phone and modem and it comes back saying it can't find one. But there is one in there cause i put it in.
It may be identified as a PCI serial controller or something similar try to install the driver to that. Or you could try the add new hardware wizard select the modem from the list, then choose have disc and select your driver.
What type of modem is it? If it is a USR type Run the Add New Hardware Wizard, but select the mode to pick the modem from a list of devices and when you get to drivers, select Have Disk. Use the disk that came with it and load the drivers. Windows should pick up on it on the next reboot. Or it could just be U/S. Could you try it in another m/c.
If you tell us the brand and type, we can help locate the driver. Or have you already installed the driver?
If you are able to do a screen shot of your Device Manager this may help us see if shoing up without the drivers being installed, as it just maybe a driver issue, when you installed the card did u ensure that it was pressed correctly into its bay/slot? What is the modem brand and model number?
@ bruinator, did you check IRQ settings in bios and also if modem came with motherboard you may need to enable it in bios settings.
its a brand new computer which I am debating on bringing back so I cant keep on breaking out the slots where the pci devices fit into so I dont think so. They wont take it back.
