    Hello again,

    My mother has a surface tablet that came with windows 8. She wants to update it to Windows 10 if possible. I tried to run windows update, but it just continuously checked for updates and nothing ever happened. Is there a way to upgrade this tablet and activate it?

    @adrian2055

    Unfortunately you're stuck with 8.1 as there is no upgrade path to 10 from this SKU/edition (CoreARM).

    I would tread very lightly and not attempt its a real pain with drivers on surface. but if you can afford to buy her a new machine. I ran across an interesting read: Upgrade Surface devices to Windows 10 with Microsoft Deployment Toolkit. not sure if sharing direct links are against the rules so just change the xx to tt: hxxps://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/upgrade-surface-devices-to-windows-10-with-mdt

    I am not too sure if activation will allow I am too lazy to do more research

    Links to official MSFT support are always allowed. But the article doesn't mention ARM support, afaik there is no windows 10 to upgrade to that supports ARM.

    Windows RT can not be upgraded it is STUCK at 8.1 - if she wants Windows 10 there are plenty of other similar that are - NuVision for one. that sells new for $149.00 IMO better than RT also,

    I know from a customer that the Arm Surface RT could be upgraded from 8.1 to 10 manually, just will have a few problems, the biggest: Touchscreen will not work!

    Personally, I use 2 3.party Windows Tablets, both Wisebooks with intel Quad CPU's, one 10'1" and the other 8".
    They're quite cheap in Thailand. The 10.1" with 32GB SSD, 2GB RAM, Intel Quad Core, SIM Slot, 3G, WiFi, 7400MAh, screen 1920 x 1080, 2 Cameras, include Bluetooth Keyboard, has cost US$ ~180! Work just excellent and I use that daily a lot time. The 8" with 16GB SSD, Intel Quad Core, 1 GB RAM, no SIM/3G, screen 1280x800 has cost US$ 80!! Both running now on Windows 10 Home, upgraded from 8.1! Unfortunate could not run on Pro because the Touchscreen will not work with W10!

    As Snuffy suggest, use a 3.party tool, would be cheaper and even maybe better that the low-cost ARM Surface!

    Its to bad its got a ARM processor, if it was an Intel core series Processor it wouldn`t be a problem, My surface has Corei5, 128SSD, 4GB Ram, 10 point Touchscreen. Works great with Windows 10 Pro x64..

  13. I do know from what everyone has said and its true that you can run into a bit of problems with a ARM Machine, It`s to bad we can`t come up with a upgrade solution for him.

  14. But my surface is not a 3rd party surface either, it`s a Microsoft Surface as i`m sure that makes a big difference right there to when it comes to upgrading windows.

    Please enlighten us! Booting Windows 10 IoT Core isn't equal to installing Windows 10.

    LOL please Tito correct me if i`m wrong but i`m sure that Microsoft would try to keep up with drivers for there own hardware would they not? even if it is a few years old. Please correct me if i`m wrong.

    @Tito:

    Couldn't you understand that I may didn't know the details, I just mentioned in my post: "I know from a customer that .........." and NOT told that I had done that on my own! Please don't start to argue about something which wasn't posted! Thanks.
