So i recently found my new favorite antivirus (comodo internet security premium) even though its free it has more features than some of the paid ones. I have 4 virtual machines each machine running a different brand (eset SS, bitdefender TS, Avast free, Comodo IS Premium.) i found out after playing around with these 4 that comodo and bitdefender were similar in features but comodo was free in price. so i ask you for our opinion. what do you prefer in terms of antivirus software and why?

The first thing I look for in any Anti-Virus/Firewall or combo is how less intruding it is & how less resources it needs. I believe if you are an educated computer user(I mean know what sites & other things to avoid) then you don't need an Anti-Virus at all, except once in a while(that too only if you want) just to make sure your data is not infected.

Well depends on if it's Business or Home use.

For business with alot of workstations I prefer Kaspersky Endpoint Select, Easy of deployment from central server, great detection rate (for both known and unknown threats), easy to use and understand management console to see exactly what each client status is, push out events (ie. Run reports, issue manual scans, schedule scans, check for security updates..etc).
For home user Nod32 or Kaspersky (Detection rate for both known and unknown threats)

Anything else then these two is subpar and uneffective.

Norton Internet Security 2013/2014 .... generally easy to use, not a resource hog anymore, effective, better ratings than most other software... no major complaints here.

Their ratings have gone down the past few years as well compared to others.

So how does NOD32 fair up against Microsoft Security Eessentials? Which will be better to use on a Windows 8 PC with 2gb ram?

I have used MSE/Windows Defender in 8/8.1 from 2010 and find it completely adequate. Find avast free to be better but why bother. I have a licence for KIS but do not use it because I find it complex and painful at default settings.

I am using AVAST as well (also on Android). Free and reliable and does not slow down performance.
I used AVG before, but it affects system performance. Boot speed and ready time of Power LAN (PLC).
Norton antivirus is the worst I have tried. Huge and performance wasting.

Same here have used Avast free antivirus for years, I did at one time use symantec antivirus corporate but moved away from it due to the fact you had to install x86 and x64 bit versions were as with avast one version installs on both architectures.
