Hey guys, is there any news/rumour/information about Service Pack 2 for Windows 7? What features from Windows 8 will be backported to Windows 7 in SP2? What is the possible release date of SP2? (It SHOULD be before Windows 8 RTM, right?) Is there any kind of info on its current development status and what stage is it in?
Guys, any recent news about Service Pack 2 for Windows 7?? Will it release before Windows 8 Release Preview(RC)??
I don't think they will release the Beta for SP2... Because if they do, they know our interest will shift from Win8 back to Win7! LOL! And this is something they don't want. That's why SP2 is going to be a silent affair! canouna knows about SP2 but inspite of direct messaging him atleast 4-5 times on twitter, he's not saying a word about SP2! Ask him anything about Win8, he will have plenty to say but ask him about SP2 for Win7, and he's drop dead silent!
I really doubt they are going to release it without a beta. It's a vital part of testing that can't just be left out because of marketing. Although many of us use beta's as a sneak preview to the finished product, they are in fact a big testing round. MS can't test all scenarios themself so they let enthousiasts do it for them. If there's no beta then there might be much bugs in it, and with windows 8 not yet released of only just released that could cause serious problems with the OS that's currently used the most on consumer PCs. Currently Win7 is still their pearl of OSes, many companies switched to it and will skip windows 8, they can't just release a buggy SP.
If they made 4 Service Packs for Windows 2000 (They were going to 5 but decided to incorporate a rollup), 3 for XP and 2 for Vista, You can be guaranteed that there will be a Service Pack 2 for Windows 7, especially since newer hardware is being produced everyday. Sure Windows will incorporate a hotfix here and there for issues but a newer service pack is the permanent fix.
I bet you there will be a SP2 and SP3 for Windows 7 when the great Windows 8 crash comes and people hold on to 7 just like they did with XP.
Figures. They want people to go to the next Windows OS (8) So they are not going to give another service pack for seven. Unless Windows 7 is great and does not need another one? who knows.
Shawn Knight is pulling this article out his backside. Until Microsoft announces any official word about not having a SP2, I and alot of other people will be eagerly be waiting for it. They have a vast amount of updates released since SP1's release so it would be foolish on their part not to.
In The Register, they names sources behind Microsoft Engineering Team, so I think its pretty much official, unfortunately... I think I have read your nick before (TPB)? lol .....
No Service Pack 2 for Windows 7: Report Microsoft has no plans to release a new service pack (SP) for Windows 7. Sources at Microsoft's engineering team told The Register that breaking precedent (of releasing a new SP every 2 or so years), Microsoft will not release SP2 (service pack 2) for the operating system. Apart from being a collection of important software updates over a period, a service pack allows Microsoft to introduce major updates to key components of the operating system, such as its kernel. Apparently, Microsoft's Windows team is too busy with Windows 8, and it is observed that by choosing to not release an SP, Microsoft could be pushing users to its newer OS. Instead of newer SPs for Windows 7, Microsoft will release timely updates for Windows 7 SP1 over Windows Update, till the operating system's support lifetime runs out (that's January 2020).
I highly doubt they will continue to support an OS all the way to 2020 w/ only one Service Pack. You have to look at their logic... THEY HAVE NONE WHAT SO EVER. They will get to Windows 7 SP2 when they realize that all these new hardware features that are included in Windows 8 are being un-utilized because masses of people have flooded back to Windows 7 via downgrade. Why do you think there was a Windows XP SP3 after Vista?? Because everyone hated Vista and wanted to downgrade to XP and their hardware was too new and somewhat advanced for XP including newer processors with new addressing blocks and instructions, newer Bluetooth technology and new Wifi technology such as Wireless N and Intel My Wifi so they forced a new service pack on XP to support these features. It is only inevitable until they release SP2.
