Compaq CQ60-420US with Windows 8.1 Pro WMC and 4 GB RAM. Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221 drivers installed. No sound with the 4 GB RAM installed. Remove one 2 GB stick of Ram and sound works great. Is there any setting to limit the sound card to only use 2GB of the ram when 4 GB are installed?
Maybe the second RAM chip is faulty? Just to rule out a defective chip- have you ensured that both of them work well with the sound card used separately?
Sound works with either one of the ram chips installed but not with both installed. The sound is integrated in the laptop.
Maybe a driver issue, you should contact the manufacturer and ask for help. Or just remove 2MB permanently and problem solved.
detweiller, op certainly talks about gig range as the machine comes with either 2 or 4 gig ram. Guess that a 8.1 would not even flicker with some kind of 2 MB
LOL, I thought it was some special high-end sound card with onboard, replacable RAM... Geeez. In this case, removing one stick is probably not the best solution.
HP/Compaq is the laziest company out there with the "best" service ever. Be prepared for a nice delay of useful data coming in if ever
The ram is 2 matched sticks of Samsung ram with this on them: 2GB 2Rx8 PC2-6400S-866-12-E3. The sound not working might be a driver problem with 4GB installed, but I can't see how the sound works perfect with only 2GB installed. The sound works equally well with either of the ram sticks installed. Another note, if the 4GB is installed and no sound Media Center will not play a DVD. With only 2GB installed and sound working Media Center plays DVD's fine. I was hoping some one knew of a way of limiting the integrated sound to 2GB with the 4 GB installed. It is not good to only have 2 GB installed when you have 4GB.
the trick is not to limit the ram but to find the cause for that issue. Consider them having a 16 or 32 bulk of ram but only can use 2 of them Second the hint upon wrong drivers or worst case a malfunction on the MB
