I can't imagine anything being worse than 8/8.1
There are new Windows builds on the horizon everyday
No official news yet, just rumours going round that we may get a Beta sometime next year.
And you expect Windows 9 to be better..?
It won't be anything else but an upgraded version of Windows 8.
If you have serious problems with Windows 8 you better try solving them.
My 8.1 performs as it should....
Or why not go back to Windows 7..?
Next year...??? Oh just kill me now...
Okay, just stand still and the pain of waiting will be over
Kill me too ...Good bye cruel world
Before windows 9, going to be windows 8.1 update 2.
That bit of news should save members here from committing suicide for the time being, of course it makes no difference to me as I use Win7 still.
Why don't you move to win8/8.1 ?
Cause I've got some old Command & Conquer (like Tiberian Sun) games that require 16-bit colour mode and also require API's that MS removed in 8/8.1, such as DirectDraw. Just hope MS correct these mistakes in 8.1 Update 2 or Windows 9!
If it wasn't for these incompatibilities I would now be using 8.1 Update on both my Laptop/Desktop. Yes I know I can dual-boot, and use 7 for compatibility reasons and load 8.1 on both of my systems, but I only have limited room on my 2x 120GB SSD's! The only way, I could do it, is install XP with no net access, cause that takes less room after installation.
Speaking for myself, I still can run old games as Age of Empires 2 on my laptop which requires DirectDraw. It could be that they have removed more than one thing but I'm just confirming that you can always play those old games especially these which need DirectDraw since it prompts you to install it on first Launch.
i think window 9 should be better.
window 8 is not too suitable for me..
I'm glad you managed to be able to play some of your old games, but as I stated it's not just DirectDraw that is required, the game also requires hardware accelerated 16-bit colour mode. Win8/8.1 only provides 32-bit colour mode only for their apps. The other colour modes are emulated.
Anyway, I've installed 8.1 Update on my desktop, and leave my laptop to run Win7 SP1, so I can still play my old games.
MS has also realized it now so they are also very keen to get rid of it by releasing windows 9. But you should also realize that this time MS does not want a response like windows 8 so if they take time then it is normal.
Who needs another crapy build i hope they put a lot of effort in windows 9 and that it will be a well balanced system
Also, new CEO. He seems to try and do things that actually make sense vs giving into pride like Balmer. He got MS to make the Office for iPad (because just on phones probably wasn't going anywhere, nobody is going to work on a phone. Even an iPad is iffy but it is still a 10 inch screen + bluetooth keyboard).
I'm worried the Start Menu will still sort of suck (I like having the folders on the right yet hardly use the left, but now the right is Metro apps. I can probably just pin stuff to the left side I never used and be done with it), but everything so far leads toward progress.
