Assuming you have an open slot, if there are no Windows 7 drivers for your on-board video card the you have get one that's Windows 7 compatible.

Do you have any audio at all? If so then you need to leave well enough alone. If not and assuming you have an open slot, then you need to get a Windows 7 compatible sound card.

Do you have to go back to Windows XP? No, not necessarily, but with a computer as old as yours you might have to if you're unwilling or unable to do the hardware upgrades.

vymrdal has a valid point. It may be time to ditch the old computer and get a more modern one. After all, it's pushing nine years old and in computer years that's ancient.

It does not ONLY affect the Win7 "aero" BUT ALSO affect the traditional built-in functions of Windows OS:-
"Windows Screen Saver 3D" & "Windows MEDIA editor" which can works normally on WinXP.
I don't know why M$ use this method to face out the old product; it is rebel the merit of "ENVIR-FRIENDLY"

maybe nobody will buy any addtional parts for old computer.
the reasons is old parts are antique which are very expensive or not on stock in HongKong
    e.g. the DDR2-533 RAM : no stock
    DDR2-667 RAM :$400-600
    DDR3-XXX RAM :$100-200

Unfortunately, that has nothing to do with the need for compatible components. I understand the economics of your problem, but cost aside, if you don't have fully compatible hardware, Windows 7 is not going to perform the way you want it to.

As far as Microsoft's motives, they are a profit oriented corporation and like all such businesses, they have to create new products with new features or they go out of business ... think Wang word processors. Unfortunately, that means things like Operating Systems get more sophisticated and feature laden and they require different and more powerful hardware. The computer world of 2013 is just not the same as it was in 2004.
