Audacity Audio Editor Free Or Not?

    I have a question about a program called audacity, its an audio editor, I remember it was opensource, but is it no longer opensource/free? I came across the "official website" which is ht t p : // au da ci ty.sou rcefor ge.net/ (REMOVE SPACES) or so it was, now I see a payment button on the audacity website to get the software is it still opensource or is it now paid if it is paid, is there an other alternative for Universal such as Mac, Linux, Windows. Thanks
