I am using Avira AntiVir Personal at the moment (free version), I like it, it has been working fine so far. I tried AVG 2011 but it gave me too many false positives it wasn't even funny.

I just wanna make sure, am I using the best free Antivirus out there? Or is there something else I oughta look at?

    Thanks in advance

Yea it's the best overall and use the free malwarebytes as well. You'll have to manually update malwarebytes prior to every scan with free version :shisha:

    ~Poll options~

    Avast 6 all the way ! :)

It has a good a detection engine, updates virus databases twice a day and, in terms of system resources, it's fair !

    ~update~

Can't say nothing about Avira, but as far as I know it's very good too.

For me i used to use symantec antivirus corporate but got fed up having to use different versions i,e, for x64 x86 xp and vista versions went with avast free few year ago and never looked back it installes on any version of windows and can be silently installed i prefer that because I do my own unattended windows cd/dvd's.
    quote from avaste webpage
Every one has there own preference when it come to virus checkers you will always get conflicting results.

It isn't in terms of detection rate, Avira is better than Norton and Eset at detection but the free version has some annoying things about it. One is that is has a stupid popup when you update, you can disable this by using software policy or reg hack. The other issue is that it has some bloody slow update servers. On top of the slow update servers they have some sort of bug that causes failed updates when they have major version changes, the forums are filled with complaints. Avast has a cool looking interface and fast update servers, but on the negative side it's bloated with all those stupid scanners . All you ever need is the file scanner and the sandbox.

does anyone have any opinions about Comodo Internet Security? I have a couple friends that swear by it, but I've not yet tried it myself.

I really like the "sandbox" feature Avast have (no sandbox in the free version) Sandbox is the future i belive.

for me Comodo is a bit complicated, for easy use u must install Avira or Avast free editions they are the best in FREE antivirus apps

u might be right, i use 512kbps connection, in terms of slow updating servers of avast, on updating first time it could be 10 to 20mb(that might be annoying) but if u even update it after 2 to 3 days it has only Kilbyes to update.

as far as ANCESTOR query about which is best i would go for AVAST free.

I've used Avira Premium for almost 2yrs & now from last 8month im using free version, The only problem i see is the update speed of free version & only one auto-update in 24hrs. i didn't see any advertisement popup.
It going very fine with comodo, i generally keep the sandbox disable & enable only when i need.

    I haven't used malwarebytes & don't feel it necessity.

indeed, its very confusing to reach the required setting, you need to struggle for at-least 5 minute , clicking all menus/section :p

btw their anivirus is not that good, detection rate is very slow & far too many false, nagging & irritating detection.

Where's Microsoft Essentials? :/ No love for Microsoft's own free and good Antivirus + Malware? I do find it laggy on old PCs though.

On one of my computers, I only mainly surf the web. On that I only have sandboxie (use the browser sandboxed) plus on-demand scanner (mbam). Theres no resident AV, I scan usb sticks with mbam before sticking them in. Works great.
