I've been using Mint on my lappy for over two years and upped to ver 10 recently. Has all I need built in or available. I've loaded it for others and they all like it and find it easy to use. My 2cts

I had no idea. As far as I know there's Windows, Linux/Unix and Mac OS. If they're not Linux, what categories do they fall into?

The best are Ubuntu and fedora (I personally use fedora with wine ).a 64 bit version is better though.

    C'mon !

They're all either Unix based kernels or derived from the unix standards.

The software outside of the kernel is basically GNU software except KDE and even it is now accepted as part of the GNU licence system.

And Apple have been a little naughty by not releasing code back to the community as they should.

I'm using Ubuntu on a VM and I'm not too pleased with it.

This is partly true, but the OP asked for the best linux OS as in OS based on the linux kernel. BSD base is almost all BSD licensed rather than GNU and Solaris has a variety of licenses used. OS X borrows most of the BSD userland and slaps its own GUI on top rather than using something based on X11 like the rest do so it would be just as valid a suggestion as BSD and Solaris. They do release much of their code back, even though the BSD license does not require it. This is why you have custom kernels for the hackintosh distros to support additional cpus, chipsets and such. Incidentally, I believe only solaris and bsd are true descendants of unix, linux was written to be unix like but is not derived from it.
