    Hi guys,
I have got a dv7 Intel (Core i7-740QM) based laptop to fix but I'm stuck with the BIOS. The thing is that it goes to the BIOS and I can change boot order etc but somehow it won't past the POST and won't boot from anything like internal hard drive, dvd-rom, usb drive. The screen stays black and after pressing couple of keys it starts beeping about three times?? If I won't press anything it stays like that forever. The board has the latest 363F1D BIOS and I have bought it from ebay as refurbished. I can also see a brief HDD LED flash when booting up but nothing happens. Changed the memory, swapped the hard drive in the secondary bay etc. When I remove the hdd at all it gives me a 03F0 error and says insert a boot drive. The HDD is actually a SSD but it passes the BIOS diagnostic test. I have used a common hard drive with the same problem. I was thinking about a BIOS recovery but this one is not RSA signed and the procedure won't work.
    Thanks for your suggestions!!

likely its secure boot or UEFI boot in bios. (turn it off ?)
so it wont boot if its not EFI type of disk.

Hi and thanks for the quick reply. Unfortunately the laptop is a bit old. I have had a similar one dv6 with the same Core i7 but there is nothing about UEFI. TTAV134 helped me to block the whitelist on the old dv6 and there is exactly the same BIOS on this dv7. It won't boot from dvd-rom or usb drive. I could remove the hard drive in the old dv6 and boot from anything but this laptop says error 03F0 even if I have got a linux live usb in it.

    Updates: Found this: techspot.com/community/topics/hp-dv7-1245dx-will-not-boot-to-any-device.171739
It looks like the same issue. The board is from ebay so it might be possible that the previous owner had two hard drives and it requires two drives to boot up again.:)

try updating bios via F2 Bios management.. but u need .bin and .sig which phoenix mod tool 2.xx should be able to make .. unless its a windows 8 bios then it will say not efi phoenix bios.

maybe load setup defaults. then turn off secure boot or raid

Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately, the BIOS is too old. I have got the UEFI usb but it won't work as the BIOS is not a RSA signed one. It won't let me to boot from anything exactly like the guy from the link says. I can access the BIOS, change the boot order or anything but it won't go past POST. When I remove the hdd it says the 03F0 error which suggest that it's looking for a boot drive. When I install one it goes to a blank screen. New SATA cable is coming soon so I will post an update.:)

Updates: SSD plus a HDD won't work. Perhaps I need a hard drive with Windows 7 installed and another hdd. Waiting for a new hdd now.

Thanks for the suggestion but I can't boot from anything. It means no Windows, live CD/USB linux etc. The laptop is like cursed or something. I have tried 10 usb stick with different content (Linux Mint, DOS, HP UEFI boot flash,..) and also recovery disk for a dv6 laptop but for the same config (including wifi) and the same BIOS. I need the content of the HP_TOOLS partition for this Dv7 or Dv6 series with Core i7-720QM and nVidia GeForce GT 230M. Perhaps if I copy the content on a hard drive, change the partition to active etc it will work.

I have done that before. It creates HP_TOOLS partition on a usb flash drive with a folder Hewlet Packard and a subfolder BIOS. BIOS has three subfolders, Current, Old and Update I think. There is nothing else. It doesn't matter, the laptop won't boot from anything so it won't load the HP_TOOLS anyway. I have still got recovery disks for my old dv6 so might do a factory reset on a similar laptop and then swap it to this one.

Yes, F2 and F1 work. I have just seen a laptop with this board and it's been sold with 2 x 320GB hard drives. Perhaps I need those to make it work or any two the same drives 320/500GB.
It goes to the HP Menu after pressing esc at boot. F1, F2, F9 and F10 work. F11 won't work but it's because the HP_TOOLS and the recovery partitions are missing from the hard drive. Also pressing enter won't work.

Well, I have done all possible test including the extensive one but everything passed. It says that System Board Check is NOT AVAILABLE but graphics card, memory, hard drive, battery etc. passed the tests.
