So this weekend I put my new computer together and installed Windows 7 (which I got from these forums) and the motherboard and video card drivers.

It keeps crashing to the blue screen like every hour or two (sometimes sooner), and I have no idea why. Can anyone help me, please?

if you post the details of the BSOD, that would be a starting point. You can google bsod and find quickly how to read the details of a BSOD and determine what the likley culprit is.

That's from the crash I just had. When I tried to open .dmp files from previous crashes, windows did not recognize it.

Since u just built it, likley either one of the drivers is buggy or you have a actual hardware conflict.

Id remove all i/o cards and usb/firewire, etc devices excpet the video card and see if it boots.

If not u need to install fresh clean windows (format over old) only see if problem exists, then add device drivers one at a time starting with the newest chipset drivers first always till problem occurs, last driver installed before BSOD is suspect.

Problem is it takes a while for the BSOD to come up. It doesn't just come up instantly when I boot up the computer. Also, without at least one stick of RAM in, nothing comes up on the monitor when I turn the computer on.

It just crashed again, anyhow, with a different message:

Can I run the RAM tester from a USB drive? I don't have any blank CDs or the like on hand.

    Alternate methods:

To run Windows Memory Diagnostic tool in Windows 7, do any one of the the following methods:

Method 1:From Windows 7 Start Menu

•Click the Windows 7 Start button, type memory, and click on Windows Memory Diagnostic
•When the Windows Memory Diagnostic screen loads, click Restart now and check for problems
    •You computer will restart
•The memory diagnostic will run and may take some time
•Windows will restart and report any errors to you
Method 2: From Windows 7 Control Panel

•Click the Windows 7 Start button.
    •Select Control Panel
•Click the System and Maintenance icon
    •Select Administrative Tools
•Then, click the Memory Diagnostics Tool icon.
•Click the option to restart your computer now and run the memory diagnostics test or to schedule the memory diagnostic test to run at your next reboot.
Method 3: From Windows 7 Command Prompt

•Click the Windows 7 Start button.
•Type cmd in the Start Menu’s search box.
•Right-click cmd.exe in the search results and then select Run as administrator.
•Type mdsched.exe in the command prompt and then press enter.
•Click the option to restart your computer now and run the memory diagnostics test or to schedule the memory diagnostic test to run at your next reboot.
Method 4: From The Windows Boot Manager

    •Restart your computer.

•You’ll be taken to the Windows Boot Manager screen.
•Press Tab on your keyboard to move to the Tools section of the boot manager screen and then press enter to start the Memory Diagnostics.
If you want to select advanced options after the Memory Diagnostic Tool starts, press the F1 key to modify the type of tests and number of times they run. After you finish making configuration changes to the tests, press F10 to start.

If you have any errors Windows Memory Diagnostic tool in Windows 7 will show up while it scans and a report will be given to you the next time your computer boots up.If you want to stop the memory diagnostic scan at any time press Esc on your keyboard. If Windows Memory Diagnostic tool in Windows 7 finds errors in your memory it’s time to replace your computer’s memory.

How long did you run it for, and were there any errors...?

What?? the computer does not restart until you manually end the memory test, and reboot the computer back into windows.

    It restarted itself.

Anyways, I'm pretty sure one of the RAM sticks is what's causing the blue screens, unless it's the motherboard, as it hasn't crashed since I took one out. (It did crash with just the other one in, though.) I just don't know how to show that it is the RAM that's bad (the memory tester that you told me to use didn't tell me anything).

You did of course purchase RAM that is listed by your motherboard mfg. as compatible...? Check the motherboard's QVL (Qualified Vendor List) for the RAM you have and verify it's listed. If not you likley have incompatible RAM.
When running 8 GB you must do proper research and purchase RAM that has been tested to work on your motherboard. What motherboard do you have what BIOS revision, and what RAM are you using ?

if the memory test restarted itsself, your computer crashed and rebooted or you did not correctly run the test. The test runs until you manually stop it. Try one of the other methods of testing your memory I listed.

The exact model number isn't listed (F3-10666CL9D-8GBRL), but similar ones are from the same manufacturer (G.Skill). ht tp://ww w.asus. com/product.aspx?P_ID=umllTHNRm4IGqnbL&templete=2 (had to put in spaces, it wouldn't let me put a link)

I will try the memory test again.

Thanks a lot for helping me out, man. Most people would probably ignore me because of my ignorance with such things.

    G.Skill says it's compatible. ht tp://gskill.us/forum/showthread.php?t=6246&highlight=10666CL9D-8GBRL+m4a88td
It's not the same cpu, but does that really matter in this case?

[EDIT] I think I have the latest bios installed, but I don't know for sure. How can I check?

Btw, I don't know how G.Skill does it, but if I RMA it to Newegg, I have to send in both sticks.

I ran Windows memory test all night (for like 11 hours) with both sticks in and it came up with nothing. Maybe I'll get different results with memtest86+.
    I have BIOS 1401 atm.

I'll run prime 95 in a little while.

    What if I don't have a multimeter?

I have an SSD and 2 HDDs (with nothing on the second HDD), what do you want me to do?

Have that running with Prime 95?

You can use the AMD monitoring utility to watch voltages , but if all 6 prime 95's run solid for hours....your power supply is prolly okay.

Well the SSD is boot so can't surface test it, no need to run any drive tests then.

yes so you can monitor the core temps and voltages...i think 6 core amd prolly around 60C max but verify it's properly cooling.

I have a BD-R that came free with something, should I use that for memtest86+, or should I use my flash drive, or should I wait until I can get a DVD-R?
