didn't realise, thought it was about driver updates, maybe someone could change the topic to this title then delete this topic.

yes but microsoft may update the iso's to be released on technet/msdn and the copies that go to shops to 16399 instead of 16385, the iso's may revoke the OEM key, maybe change the ballot screen, no-one knows for sure yet.

Normal updates (if we don't take SP) update version of one or several files, but not the version of the whole OS build.

but that cancels the idea behind RTM (no further developments, only updates)

I wonder if the whole thing has been orchestrated as a gigantic marketing exercise with the real RTM waiting in the wings.
The “leaked” RTM and “leaked” OEM key was just to initiate publicity and create frenzied interest for the release of Windows 7.
    Just a thought.

I doubt it, especially since MS has already officialy given several OEMs their RTM copies. Check Brandon's Blog at MS.

Maybe this whole thing has been a setup from microsoft, the RTM, Key, etc as a way to catch piracy. However, would they really go that far?

The new build number is due to all the hotfixes... RTM is still 7600.16385 - it was officially voted to be signed off and that is that.

Or so we think. Microsoft has a lot of power in the world. If they wanted to go as far as to create a facade, they could. They could simply pay their partners and such to keep up the illusion, and "updates" could a way as to report anyone who's using the RTM. Most unlikely, but still something to keep in mind.
