If you have a Server @ Home or Work, did you prefer to build it yourself or buy it from a company such as Dell.

Definitely prefer to build myself. I built my home server with parts bought from newegg:
    - Gigabyte GA-X58-USB3
    - Intel Core i7-950 quad core 3.06GHz
    - 24GB of G.SKILL Ripjaws DDR3 1333
    - Adaptec 1430SA HostRAID (got this on ebay, works better than Intel Matrix RAID)
    - 2x WD2500YD and 2x WD1001FALS

At work, I'll typically build something based on a SuperMicro rack server.

For work I think it's better to buy it from a company. I would built it if it was for home using an AMD Fusion APU, it's perfect for home, besides, you can turn it into your home media player also :D

What OS do you recommend for a home server?

Always cheaper to build and the recommended OS is Windows Home Server :D or Linux.
