I have a Dell Inspiron laptop with Windows 10 Pro. ver. 1909 (Build 18363.1198) with a dead ATM Radeon 7700M card.
To be able to use the machine I have uninstalled the driver for this card and disabled it in the device manager, this the laptop works fine.

Tried to update to Windows 20H2 through Windows 10 Update Assistant, got all green, but failed because the update program downloads, installs and enables the dead card and the result is a BSOD in the first restart, and when restarting after the BSOD the update program rolls back the changes and I'm back to Windows ver.1909.

Is there any work around? Can I stop the update program from enabling this card when restarting?

    Thanks for any help.

Can't you disable the card in the BIOS?

    Thank you Enthousiast

In fact Dell Bios is very limited, there is nothing there to disable it.

Are you sure that this BSOD is related to your dead card because if you disabled the card i don't see why it will enabled during the upgrade.

I will face the same problem when restarting for the first time, it will enable the card, I think my only chance is from within Windows where I can stop downloading and enabling this card.

Maybe @Serg008 knows some option to disable the dead card in the bios?

He is the MDL bios expert.

Thank you @Serg008 and @MS_User for your answers.

    @Serg008

This machine's BIOS is a Dell version A14, 2018 and the previous version was also very similar almost nothing can be done with it.

    @MS_User

I did not understand what you mean by "BIOS admin locked" this is a personal laptop, my account is the only admin, would you please explain to me what admin password? and it is not under warranty anymore.

If u cant change any of the values in the bios and options are grey out that means the Admin password is set , the only thing u can try is remove the cmos battery for 20 minutes and plug it back and see if it resets the settings.

    Dear @dabour
If you want a solution to your problem, you should start by giving your computer very accurate information.
So far, all we know is that this version of the Dell Inspiron, but what was exactly installed when it released.
There is a huge amount of misleading information here today.
I can tell you that this ATM Radeon 7700M card is probably not dead, but an old and non-working driver has been installed by mistake.
But this cannot be said with certainty on the basis of this information.
Likewise, I can assure You with certainty that no DELL computer is factory-set with a password and nothing is blocked, except for upgrading to Windows 10 version 19041.xxx 20H1 and later. This restriction is still there for some Dell versions. For example I bought during year two Dells, one Inspirion, release date 2019 and one Vostro relesed on 2020. One of them had this restriction, but not the other.
The latest version allowed so far has been 19H2.
But that doesn't mean you can't upgrade. I was in exactly the same personal situation a few months ago.
Current recommendation - Provide complete information about your system, including the DELL service tag, ie the 7-digit number that corresponds exactly to the factory version of your computer. (My Inspirion for example is DH160Y2) Once this information is known, you and we can move on and I'm pretty sure there are no more obstacles.
Of course, this so-called ATM Radeon 7700M card, which you said is dead, but what the word "dead" means to you, I don't know.
Warning - if you don't know exactly what you're doing, you better not do anything, as you have a pretty good chance of ruining a lot of things.

I would also like to know what you have already done, because there is a possibility that you have already caused a lot of additional problems and then you have to start from scratch, that is, restore the factory settings or give up the factory settings altogether.
If you tried to perform a BIOS Reset, it is very likely that the UEFI settings have been corrupted and need to be restored.
But my goal is not to scare you, first the information and then let's see what the situation is.

    Hi, @kaljukass
Thank you for the answer, the info:
    • Inspiron 15R SE 7520
    • Service Tag:
    • Graphics : 2GB AMD Radeon HD 7 730M
    • Memory : 8192MB (2x4096) 1600M Hz DDR3
    • Processor : Intel Core i7-3632 QM (up to 3.20 GHz, 6M cache)
The graphic card if enabled will freeze the machine in a matter of one minute, trying the latest driver from ATM site or installing the original one will make no difference.
I did not try to change or flush the BIOS as this is beyond my capabilities.
The only action I made was to disable the card and any update for it in the Group Policy as this is the only way to boot the machine. computer configuration>administrative template>Windows Component>Windows Update>Do not include drivers with Windows Update = enabled.
If more info required, please let me know.
I did not made any passwords anywhere except the Windows Login one.

Thank you. I will now try to get an idea of this and then come up with a solution.
One thing left still unanswered or I forgot to ask - whether this computer is currently up and running, only not updatable.
If so, what version of Windows is currently installed there, and when and how is it installed. Ie, was it also result of update or was made clean install.
Of it depends whether is possible and reasonable to upgrade this version or it would be wiser to really do a factory reset and then a clean installation.
To upgrade an existing one, it must be in absolutely in order, without any problems.
If You think, it is OK, then You can think about upgrade.

    Hi, @kaljukass

The computer is working, but with the AMD card disabled, as mentioned before this is the only way to get it to boot, otherwise it will freeze and end up with BSOD.
Windows 10 Pro. ver. 1909 (Build 18363.1198), clean installed, about a year ago.

I have the same problem with an old laptop with unsupported display card.

All updates install normally except major updates. The only solution I found and solved the problem is as follows:

    1. Laptop disk converted to virtual machine.
    2. I used Vmware Player (on an other computer) to run and update virtual machine.
    3. I have made a disk image of virtual machine disk.
    4. I have restored virtual machine disk image to laptop disk.
    5. The laptop operates with the latest windows 10 version with out any problem

Yes @WindowsGeek tried all compatible drivers for this card and no go.

Clean install will get me to the same point, because as you know when the installation program restarts the machine it will end up with a BSOD, besides reinstalling everything will be real hard for me.
