If your new laptop came with Windows 8/8.1 then you can upgrade to Windows 10 for free. But you got until July 29th to do it

If the laptop already came with windows 10 you won't need to get a genuine ticket to be able to reinstall it later.
That is of course unless you plan to install a different version windows 10.

However if you install 7 in a VM the ticket would be bound to the VM and NOT the host machine (laptop) that you are running it on.
I myself have had a case where a machine wouldn't install windows 7 so I used a windows 8 install instead and upgraded this to windows 10.

There are several threads where this has been discussed repeatedly. You'll need to install in a native VHD not a VM
