I've left Windows Update off of this old PC I installed Windows 8 from that old Media Center Upgrade giving a retail key...is it safe to update to even 8.1?

Damn, well then is it okay to get all updates minus 8.1?

I think it's too early to say for sure.

Clean 8.1 installs with old 8.0 "media center" keys don't seem to work, but updating inside Windows to 8.1 might work. We'll see in a few weeks.

Ok, but can you say for sure that the in-Windows 8.1 installer (which will probably also come as an exe/msi at some point) will work just like the 8.1 ISO installation in this regard?

If my deduction is correct, then the Store update is nothing but the same setup which uses esd instead of wim. And about the key & activation, it is determined by the licensing module of the OS itself which is same for different distribution channels.
