I tried installing Windows 8 on an old Pentium 4 2.4Ghz with 2GB RAM and got 0x0000005D, which means CPU does not have DEP, I also confirmed with SecurAble. It would be nice to jump from XP to 8, since Windows 8 is slightly faster than 7 and less memory hungry. I'm also considering ThinPC if Windows 8 is in fact not an option.

So... is there any workaround to install Windows 8 without DEP, or are my choices limited to XP/7/ThinPC?

Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for! Don't know how I missed it when searching for a solution... I'm going to read the entire topic and try over the weekend. If it worked on a P3 500Mhz/512Mb, it will certainly work on a P4 2.4Ghz/2048Mb!
