    computer specs
    asus m5a99x evo motherboard
    amd 8 core fx-8150
    8 gb ram (2x4gb)
    750w power supply 80+
    ati radeon 5700 1gb graphics

i bought an asus m5a99x evo motherboard but it doesn't have in-built graphics so first i tried to use my ati radeon 5700hd(hdmi and dmi ports) but the installation kept failing then i used an ati 4500 (vga, dmi, hdmi ports) and windows 7 installed but the screen keeps going black for about 5 seconds every time i do something e.g. move the mouse, type, open apps. i havent touched the bios and is still set to default. btw the screen doesnt turn black in bios mode. i have tried both graphics cards in other desktops.

    My questions are:
    1. can a operating system be installed on a computer that only has pci-e graphics with no vga port?
    2.what graphic card(s) should i use for a m5a99x evo mothrboard?
    3. is the screen problem caused by a bad driver or is it the motherboard?
    4. does it need a larger power supply?
    5. should i add more ram?
    6. is ati better than nvida for an amd chip-set?

In your manual under Bios advanced mode ..It says under "initiate Graphics adapter [Peg/PCI]" it allows you to choose which graphics controller to use as primary boot device..Check there..pg. 3-15 of your manual

Do you receive any beep code upon booting?

    thanks for replying,
the peg/pci setting is set as default
which should it be set to the peg/pci or the pci/peg?
no beep codes with the 4500 but with the 5700 card it has the no vga detected but it has a dmi port which is connected to a dmi monitor and a hdmi port which is connected to a tv
with the 5700 windows 7 and ubuntu freeze during installation
hdd is wd 2tb caviar green
does the os installation need a vga adapter in order to install?
the 5700 and the 4500 cards both work on other motherboards, im using the 5700 right now whilst typing.

    then use that one

are you installing using GPT and Uefi?

ive got it to work upto "setup is updating registry settings", its just hanging so far, with the with the 5700 with a vga to dmi adapter.

didn't work installing with the 4500 then i'll swap then when the hard drive has full win 7 installed

maybe windows 7 has a problem with computers that dont have a vga port on them?

ram is fine according to the motherboard, did the memok test ( it wouldn't start if it wasn't compatible)
win 7 was bought from pc world so should be fine
I'm going to test the settings in the bios to see if that's the problem.

okay ive fixed it. basically it was a bios problem. by default the m5a99x evo sets the cpu to energy efficiency mode (cool n' quiet : C1E : SVM ) which installers don't like, because installers stop and start alot kinda like trying to go 100 mph in first gear. so i set them all to disable and it installed in 5 mins 47 seconds. i'll have to try each one to see which one(s) cause(s) it to fail.
    ram is kingston 2 x 4gb ~1300mhz
anyway it worked special thanks to redroad and acrsn for your help.
