I have Windows 8 in my laptop, so I can upgrade for free to Windows 10. But I want perform a clean install, my current Windows 8 is terribly broken, so upgrade that thing will hurt...

So I think if I can...
    1- Upgrade from 8 to 10
    2- Save the Serial Number/Key/Etc;
3- Format the PC and use my legit key in the new Windows 10 install

    Thanks

Reset 8, upgrade to 10, reset again

You'll be able to clean install 10 anyway once it RTMs

Thanks for that. I think that this should be put somewhere where more people can see it easily.

The eligible for free upgrade is Windows 8.1 with Update

not windows 8 and not windows 8.1 rtm

To be correct, the only one that will recieve through WU :cool2:. The others are eligible too, but need the ISO for the Upgrade.

can't you do a sfc /scannow administrator command prompt to cleanup you system, you can upgrade your win 8 to win 8.1 from the win store,i thought it was a free upgrade, then you can upgrade to win 10 from winupdate, get activated, then download iso and do a clean install if you want.

Where have you read that? All I have seen is that you have to upgrade before doing a clean install to get the free upgrade but nowhere have I seen you have to wait for MS to push it out to you through GWX. I will certainly be trying it with an ISO before waiting for them even if I have to revert back after I do.

Abbodi is correct, AFAIK, all free upgrades must be done thru GWX, it's the only channel that will give you a win10 upgrade key bundled to the machine. win8/8.1 OEM's won't get a win10 upgrade key, the OEM;DM key in the BIOS will be updated as a win10 OEM;DM key. :D

only if you do not want to continue using the insider program. as long as you are part of the insider program you opt in to get new builds as we have been getting all along, even after rtm. if you choose to stop insider, you need to have a win7/8.x installed and do an update like everyone else.

This is a grey area where MS have not clarified (yet), they persuaded users to upgrade their win7/8/8.1 to win10 TP, yet nobody knows if the user has to re-install the win7/8.8.1 again.

Last year I joined a MS program where they specifically asked me to install a win7 on bare metal and retail activated, then upgrade all the way to win10RTM, after the first upgrade I found (in slmgr) the key was changed to the Preview generic key, I got a year of O365 after submit report, now I still don't know what would happen after I finished upgrading to win10RTM. :p

this is true, MS changes their story more than most people reverse and invert their underwear

if you had a legitimate system then upgraded to ten as an insider, you will receive the rtm for free, you can opt out of insiders if you want after receiving rtm,no need to roll back to 8.1.If your system upgraded from a Genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 license it will remain activated, but if not, like if it was xp or vista, you will be required to roll back to your previous OS version or acquire a new Windows 10 license.

Nobody can answer that with absolute certainly. That was true a year ago and it's still true now.
