the DigitalRiver files where the same as MSDN files, hash identical. Names where changed to protect the innocent lol

If you changed your iso's at all, yes the iso will have a different hash. Although you did the changes so they are safe for you, they are not authentic iso's anymore.

These are the DigitalRiver files I archived with checksums for each.

Palladin, I recently downloaded the latest Wn7 Pro and Win7 Ultimate x64 ISO's from threads on MDL. I verified them using SHA1 hashes posted at the MSDN website. The files verified just fine.

Then, like you, I ran eicfg Removal Utility version 1.2.1 on them (to patch them into 'universal' install ISO's). Once that was done I tested the hashes compared to the MSDN hashes and, of course, the hashes no longer matched.

Then I again ran eicfg Removal Utility on the ISO's I had just turned into universal install ISO's. Of course on this round of running eicfg Removal Utility on those ISO's the utility un-did the change that it made to the ISO's on the first occasion. Then I did a hash check on the 'un-done' ISO's again and they were back to being in agreement with the hashes posted at MSDN.

Point is the eicfg Removal Utility can apply its patch to the ISO's but if you run it against the ISO a second time then the patch gets undone and the hash value of the ISO returns to the original value it had before the patch was ever applied. So you have a quick way of getting back to the original files you had before you ever patched them. Test it for yourself and see.

    Hope this helps.

crashnburn, the easiest way out of your dilemma is to forget about the ISO's you have just now and start from the beginning - but only download ISO's that you can verify from hashes provided my Microsoft themselves. After all if I had the technical knowledge of how to do so (I don't) I could create an ISO purporting to be a legitimate Microsoft ISO and provide a hash I generate myself to prove that the ISO was genuine (which of course it itsn't because I tampered with it). The only way you can really check is if you are using hashes published on a Microsoft website.

I'm not allowed to post links on MDL yet as I don't have enough posts to allow me to do so but search for the following thread on MDL: "Windows 7 SP1 Media Refresh - Torrent Download Links". (That thread is a Sticky so it's right at the top of the Windows 7 forum pages - easy to find.)

In that thead you will see another link titled "More download links might be found here". Click on that link and you go to a webpage which has the word "mirror" at the very start at of the webpage address. If you scroll to the extreme right-hand side of that webpage you will see that for most of the ISO's offered for download there is a green colored link that is a number. If you click on one of those green colored links it will take you to a MSDN webpage where the Microsoft SHA1 hash for that ISO is displayed (you have to click on the 'Details' option to get the hash to display).

So, in this way you can get ISO's that you can verify as being completely genuine because you are checking against Microsoft's own hashes posted on one of Microsoft's own webpages.

As to what is the latest and greatest ISO to download? Well, I'm not an expert but an ISO that has the title in the form: "en_windows_7_ultimate_with_sp1_x64_dvd_u_677332.iso".

As far as I know "sp1" means it's at Service Pack 1 level, and the "u" means that is what is called the media refresh edition. And as far as I know (as at the date of this post) that 'media refresh edition' is the highest release of (in this example) Windows 7 Ultimate. (If I've got any of that wrong then I'd be pleased if someone would post and say why it is wrong.)

    Hope this helps.

just one correction, it is impossible to create a file with a SHA1 that is not authentic. SHA1 is a SHA1 period, however an MD5 CAN be changed to portray something it isn't. If the SHA1 (Or Sha2->256 or higher) is the same as the MSDN value, it is guaranteed to be legit. The members here at MDL are really good, but we (or anyone) cannot spoof a SHA1 YET :D

Oh, EFA11. I see how you're reading my previous post. Spoofing a SHA1 wasn't what I was saying/suggesting at all (though I'm surprised to learn that an MD5 can be spoofed).

Maybe I can explain what I was trying to say in a different way:

    1) I have a legitimate ISO.
    2) I alter it, maybe bundling in some malware.
    3) I generate a SHA1 for the ISO I've altered.
    4) I put the ISO on a torrent site and include with it the SHA1 hash that I generated myself.
    5) In the readme for the ISO torrent I then claim (really I'm just implying) that checking the ISO against the SHA1 that I've provided proves that the ISO is legitimate. (See, this is sleight of hand.)
    6) People 'check' the file against the SHA1 I provided and think, "Oh well, that's fine. It must be okay." (Which is of course, dumb.)

It's a problem I had with some of the offerings on MDL. Links to ISO's are provided, though the naming scheme for the ISO is different from that provided by Microsoft, so you might not be able to find that ISO at a Microsoft website. Along with the links a SHA1 hash is provided - but with no way to check the validity of that hash against a hash provided by Microsoft for the same (though renamed) ISO. (So this is again, a situation in which sleight of hand could be being played.) There is no way that an ISO can be taken to be genuine unless you can check it against a hash you got directly from Microsoft.

Hope that makes it clearer what I was trying to say in the first instance - though I can see how it can be misread.

yes that is clearer, and why we always suggest check any files hash against MS hash. Names are not important but make it easier when they are left original, certainly.

Maybe it's just sheer curiosity and following the scientific method that experiments to be valid have to give reproducible results. That's why I downloaded two - to see if what is claimed actually works with 'Pro' and 'Ultimate' install DVD's. Sheer curiosity on my part and doesn't seem pointless to me. It's also why I experimented with applying the patch then undoing it and checking all the results against Microsoft hashes - just to see what happens - and I learn something in the process.

It's pretty well known that various editions differ only in the ei.cfg file. One genuine MSDN iso, any edition, is all that anybody really needs to download and keep in their archives. Well, maybe two MSDN iso's, one x86 and one x64.

Great tip, and of course it's right in the readme, but I missed it or wasn't paying attention.

So I made some copies of the files that I had downloaded from Hei-doc.net last year, and then re-ran the eicfg Removal Tool against them. I got the message that the ei.cfg file was restored, but when I checked the hashes they didn't match the untouched iso's. :(

Here's what I came up with:
    Code:
    0BCFC54019EA175B1EE51F6D2B207A3D14DD2B58 from Archive.org
    0bcfc54019ea175b1ee51f6d2b207a3d14dd2b58 EN_WINDOWS_7_PROFESSIONAL_WITH_SP1_X64_DVD_U_676939.ISO (from EFA11)
    BFD9CDBD3703E418D09B08DFFF0A30EB64F29E78 Win-7-Pro-64bit-X17-59186.iso (from Hei-doc.net)
    AA11DE2522E4FAFD1AB899F696DEB3DF7C20DDC8 ** after eicfg Removal Tool re-ran (from Hei-doc.net)

    D89937DF3A9BC2EC1A1486195FD308CD3DADE928 from Archive.org
    d89937df3a9bc2ec1a1486195fd308cd3dade928 EN_WINDOWS_7_PROFESSIONAL_WITH_SP1_X86_DVD_U_677056.ISO (from EFA11)
    13815424F65BAD895D9091BF9BD477A8B790CC6E Win-7-Pro-32bit-X17-59183.iso (from Hei-doc.net)
    CDF11F9B61686A3FA54D8E4BE4704D1176218F71 ** after eicfg Removal Tool re-ran (from Hei-doc.net)

Just to be sure, I ran the utility again, and it said the ei.cfg file was removed. Then I calculated the hash on that file, and it matched my original hash. Then ran the utility again, and it said the ei.cfg file was removed and when I calculated the hash, it was identical to the first go-round, that didn't match the untouched version hash.

But at this point I'm stumped, but glad I wasted the bandwidth to download the untouched versions from Archive.org. :p

yes the 7600 file is non-SP1 x64 and

en_windows_7_ultimate_with_sp1_x64_dvd_u_677332.iso is the same file as X17-59465.iso
The SHA1: 36AE90DEFBAD9D9539E649B193AE573B77A71C83 wont lie to you :D

    -ed-
your red text above is an SP1 without the refresh "U" I believe.
