Although Microsoft says ESU support for Windows 7 will end in January 2023, there have been rumors that it will be extended for another 3 years. We will find out when February 2023 "patch Tuesday" arrives. Personally, I hope the rumors are true.
The patches for windows 7 and server 2008 you get from the microsoft update catalog are literally the same file. They might add some kind of version checking but even if they do that's probably easy to get around. I would say the extra 3 years is nearly guaranteed.
Windows 7 cannot use Server 2008 files. Only Windows Vista can use them. Server 2008 R2 files are a different story.
I think it's pretty clear I meant Server 2008 R2. But if it makes you feel good then you got me. You did it hero.
what about windows server 2008 (vista; r0)? i feel like it’s gonna also get an extra 3 years like r2, so has anyone check license files for server2008 (vista) esu year 4 5 6? if that’s so, that would be surprising, because then vista’s supported for like 19 years or so, even longer than better 7 can’t check at this moment myself
Chuterix: I am testing Windows Vista SP2 64-bit and am updating it every month with Server 2008 updates. I will find out during February 2023 "patch Tuesday" if Server 2008 updates are still available. Hopefully, Carlos is right.
Vista don't even require the ESU license to install Server 2008 updates (except .NET 4.x) the ESU component is exempted from installation, along with WU Client and few other components
so Microsoft did another "oopsie we gave Windows 7 3 more years of support" like they did with Vista and XP
if server 2008 (vista) trick works on windows vista (they’re same kernels) then posready trick should work but in a different way
However even if Win7 can continue to update, certain applications won't support Win7 anymore. Like Google Chrome newer versions won't run on Win7 after the official ESU ends.
Mozilla Firefox is my primary browser in Windows 7 and Windows 10. In a few months, Mozilla will supposedly drop support for Windows 7. I am not a fan of Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, so it looks like I will need to search for a supported user-friendly browser.
