I have Windows 10 build 10166 on a very old Dell E1505 laptop with an ATI Mobility X1300 display adapter. Windows 10 didn't actually have a driver for this adapter, so I borrowed the one from Windows 7.

Whenever I cold boot (shutdown -> power on), I only see a white mouse cursor on a black/blank screen instead of the login screen. I can move the mouse around, but that's about it (that I can see anyway). In this state, if I put the laptop to sleep by closing the lid, then turn it back on, the display then works correctly and I can login normally.

If I boot from hibernate, then the display also works just fine.

Any ideas if this is fixable?

No don't turn off fast boot.
    This is really strange issues
    Maybe driver related?

Tried it. It does seem slower to boot, but it works! Thank you! :)

Yes, probably because I just copied it off Windows 7 install. I couldn't find a proper one for this old adapter. :(

Display driver's is not the problem here as standard vga driver is adequate. the question i am going to ask gere is how long did you wait for the black screen. you say you can see the mouse.

when I first installed win 10 I had to wait a few min's before i got to the logon screen. win 10 seem's to do some housework in the background before showing the logon screen and seen as you have stated that it is an old computer then i would give your little thing time to think first.

next time give it a chance to do what it has to do :)

This happens almost all the time on my laptop. I have to hard shut it down by holding my power button then start it again and it starts working again.. Kind of annoying.

Got a link to that driver? I'd like to try if it will work for the X1300. Thanks.
Edit: Nevermind, found it. :) Will try later.

I just tried it with fast boot on. I left it alone on the blank+mouse cursor screen for about 10+ minutes, and nothing happened. :(

I think even with fast boot off, it only takes about 2-3 minutes at most to see the login screen.
