worked like a charm. I actually deleted the cvversion.ini and it went off without a hitch.

Wow, that saved me my Saturday morning. Worked like a charm. Didn't have to go download drivers or anything. Even Windows Defender was up to date.

    Thanks

As per microsoft upgrading from Win8 RTM to Win 8.1 is supported. incase you are unable to update build no as "9200" (RTM - Win8).

No need to edit anything. Just delete the file, and it'll give you that option for any version.

Hi. This solution did not work for me. Options that I get is to keep personal files and do nothing. No keep windows settings and apps. The following are what I did:

    1. Ensure language is set to English (US).
    2. Change cversion.ini from 9458.0 to 9431.0.
    3. Change cversion.ini to 9200.
    4. Deleted cversion.ini.
    5. Remove 2nd HDD.
    6. Ensure retail key is for 8 Pro.

I have 8.1 Preview with Media Center. Any ideas guys? Thanks.

    Hi. Thanks for replying.

    1. The architecture matches.
    2. I started from an untouched source but extracted it to an empty USB drive using the Windows 7 USB utility from Microsoft.

Hmmmm. Sorry. I'm out of ideas. :/

Your system boots using BIOS/MBR, not UEFI/GPT, right?

I just did it.upgraded from windows 8 pro, not preview.upgraded everything but lost my activation and wmc and since im dual booting with windows 7,it deactivated that also.so had to reactivate it again.this is how I did it>I booted into windows 8.put in my 8.1 disc.copied the files to a folder.then deleted the cversion file in the sources folder.then I ran the setup exe.i did get the option to keep my personal files, settings and apps.so I selected that and continued with setup.after a few reboots it was done.(it took a while so be patient).the only glitch I see so far is when I run internet explorer,i get a message saying some add ons aren't compatable.probabley just a matter of updating them?ill try later.(I got wmc added and windows activated gain)

Maybe uncheck 'Hide extensions for known file types' in Folder settings 'View' tab :D.
