I installed Windows 8.1 on a PC with Athlon XP Barton following the workaround by Jan1 which I have successfuly used on multiple Pentium 4 PCs. My only deviation from the original post was copying winload.exe and ntoskrnl.exe on an external drive, patching them from another PC, and then placing them back using Recovery Is Possible Linux from HBCD. I patched the NX, PAE and SSE2 checks and the winload patchguard (x86).
The problem is, that on boot I get a BSOD with error code 0xc0000221 saying that the ntoskrnl.exe is missing or contains errors. Checking with the RIP Linux once again, the ntoskrnl.exe is present.
What have I done wrong, and what are the possible fixes?
