Dell has a patch (.exe file) for activating Windows 7 on earlier model Latitude laptops. You install W7 and then run the patch, its totally legit from Dell. Does anyone know what this does exactly? Is it modding the BIOS?
It probably installs a BIOS update for SLIC 2.1, and then installs a cert + OEM SLP key. Or it just adds cert + key to existing DELL slic.
Dell doesn't call those activation patches, in the past they just call those bios updates and list windows 7 compatability as a new feature of the bios... at least in the past.. I would be interested in seeing a link to this app as well
All the latest Dell BIOS' don't say anything about W7 compatibility and they came out long before W7. I'm guessing this is like an unreleased BIOS update.
Ya, I can do that once I get it. I also have a Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade disc. They may actually be the same discs. Guess we'll find out.
I see. Once I have the "patch" i think it will be obvious if it is actually a BIOS update. I have a few latitudes to test this on too.
Oh, was the D620 ever sold with the free Win7 upgrade? It is a pretty old system to have come with that... about as old as the Inspiron 6400, as a matter of fact, same chipset.... I believe it was once sold with XP...
right, that is what I am saying, so why would they have a bios update for that then, wouldn't make sense.. maybe for the D630 though... I don't know when they stopped selling those but it is a 2 year old system as well, maybe they just link to our bios mods? lol
Certainly is strange. I have also yet to hear of any OEM activation app. If such a thing exists it is probably for SLIC 2.1 DELL bioses or something, just to install cert + key. But an "OEM activator app" is something I have yet to see.
