Hi all, apologies if this has been asked before. I bought my 6yo son a Dell Latitude D610 laptop for his 1st computer. It has Win7 Home Prem' on it. It only had 1gig of memory when I bought it, but was persuaded to buy 2x 2 gig sticks for it to run win7 better. Everytime I try to bump up the memory by inserting the 2nd stick, it wants to start - but stops!! Does fine with 3gig and under, but not with 4gig. Since then I've been told it's a bios issue and to update it, well the only bios that I can find is what's on it already - Dell Inc. AO6 10/02/2005 - . Is it a bios issue or should I just be grateful that something this old can handle win7? Have done all the drivers update using Driver Genius Professional Edition - finding the video controller driver was a nightmare, but persisted and won on that lil' problem. So again, my apologies if this is an already answered question (tried search - but not sure what to look for) and sorry if in the wrong forum as well. If anyone can help me in this matter I would be very apreciative as would be my son also....

    Here are it's specs...

you cant put a quart into a pint pot! the Dell D610 has a max memory of 2 GB ! so send back your four gigs and replace with two x1 GB

Very interesting...I should check to see if my D610 supports 3GB.

@sleipni66 - Looks like 3GB is the "real" max even though the specs say 2GB. Return one of your 2GB sticks if possible.

Since you have the built-in Intel graphics, if you want a bigger PATA hard drive, you'll need to flash my D610 A51 modded BIOS for 48-bit LBA support.

very interesting indeed... I just tried this with my D610 that has ATI video instead... it doesn't recognize the additional 2GB at DIMM slot B, and with DIMM slot A (under keyboard), it fails POST with memory address errors... I used only a 1GB stick and 2GB stick on both tests

tried it with my D410 also (which has intel video but same 915 chipset)... same thing with DIMM slot B, but with DIMM slot A, the video was garbled on bootup

I guess it's some weirdness with the D610 with the intel video that allows you to get away with 3GB?
