Hello Everyone, I'm sure there must be a sollution on this board(treasure trove) somewhere but I've not been able to find one, sorry for posting if that's the case. So anyway I wanted to activate my old Dell XP Pro SP 2 offline as a Virtualbox guest using SLP1.0. I thought from what I'd read it was just a case of setting the Dmi strings correctly but no, not for Dell you need a string at a position that's tricky to achieve with Virtualbox. To cut a long story short I figured out a way by building a suitable BIOS, was there a simpler way? By the way thanks to everyone who contributes to this board, it's a fantastic resource. -- Jon
Thanks for the reply. That would have been quicker than hacking the Virtualbox BIOS code, but not as much fun. If it's not against the rules I'll post the modified code/ROM if it's of any use to anyone.
I know I should have been clearer I meant an easier way to activate the disc I had (and paid extra to get, it's the principal of thing). Unfortunately I can't attach BIN or ZIP files otherwise this would be the new easiest way for others :-(
any online service upload does it fine, being hume you can make link display as non-link... paying for oem disk & running in VB makes no sense..., as it has nothing with legality
I'm experimenting with the idea of a "Swiss Army Knife" rom that will have the SLP1.0 strings for many machines. My first attempt can be found here: https :// www (dot) sendspace.com/file/req0us It has these SLP1.0 strings: Spoiler "Acer TravelMate" "AcerSystem" "alienware" "americanfuture" "BIOSLOCKFUNCTION ELITEGROUP" "Compaq" "Dell System" "DIXONSXP" "EMACHINES" "emaxs" "Equus" "Equus Computer Systems" "Founder PC" "FSC SERVER" "FSC SYSTEM" "FUJITSU SIEMENS" "Gateway" "GIGABYTE" "GREATWALL" "HaierComputer" "HASEECOMPUTER" "HEDYCOMPUTER" "Hewlett" "HIGRADED" "HP PAVILION" "IBM CORPORATION" "iQon.ie" "Lan Plus" "LEGEND Dragon" "LENOVO" "MAXDATA" "NEC Computers" "NEC_Product" "NECC_" "NECC1" "NEC-PC" "OQO Inc/Zepto/(jja)" "powerspec" "PRIMERGY" "SIEMENS" "SNC302EEH" "SYSFIC" "TCL123" "TOSHIBA" "TRIGEM" "TSINGHUA TONGFANG COMPUTER" "vpr Matrix" "WinBook" "MEDIONNB" "MEDIONPC" I've only tested two
Thanks for the testing SLIC Toolkit Gave me the same and I didn't know about XPOEM at all, that's handy to have... Where might I find that please? I haven't been able to reproduce the reboot crash, but I won't rule out a BIOS issue just yet. I wouldn't recommend HEX editing on the BIOS, it's far safer to build the source and it's probably more future proof ;-) At the risk of looking stupid (again) what does the driver do?
https :// www (dot) sendspace.com/file/5wreno Done, please let me know if it works out for you (or give me a chance to fix things if it doesn't ;-) ).
I was wondering if you could re-upload your modified VBox BIOS, the Sendspace link has expired. I've tried hex editing the VBox BIOS but something isn't working correctly because I'm not getting SLP activation.
