Raphael's way was an early way to have MCE running on a plain XP. It was problematic because was not possible to install the updates from WU. Later a better method fas made available, and needed just a single registry entry and few commands to install the unpatched MCE packages. In vista and later the matter looks more complicated. Maybe using the old tool ntswitch one can convert a server machine to desktop and use the desktop package as they are and then convert back the OS to server. Then the so called kernel protection should be taken in account...
Man I dumped WMC center. Always issues installing. Have to mount a big tent and go through hoops to get it to sink with Xbox and besides is the ATSC, QAM crap for Canada still an issue?
There 3.party alternatives available, why not go with them. Most of them even having more features as the native WMC!
WMC just works. I have an Anysee E30TC in use with DVB-C and I only had to search for transponders with the CNO Tool. Then I just needed to set up WMC and done.
If its so old and so crap and not worth bothering about. Why are you wasting your time posting about it in this thread. Can you post some info on these 3rd party alternatives. I keep hearing about them, but I've not seen a 'real' alternative to WMC posted on any of these threads yet.
So that others don't waste their time like I did. Call it a public service announcement. If only QAM was available with WMC.
XBMC/Kodi has already failed, As a number of people here have tried it already. It needs 3rd party utils to cover WMC's 'standard' functions, plus its fair to complex for a normal PC user to setup and run. Which is a shame as its a great project and makes a brilliant Media Center front end. LOL, I like it. There was some QAM related stuff in the Vista beta, but it got dropped, I think the big US TV companies put the boot in to stop that.
What some are liking, others dislike! There exist for everybody something what he/she would like and many what will be disliked! That said, I wouldn't recommend any of them. I just use what I like and what's doing what I want. And to discuss about that is totally useless because it will mainly end up in hated outcome!Just anyone should search, test and check and keep what's liked and send the rest to the bin!
I would like to see if this is possible too. Even though there are 3rd party options nothing really replaces WMC for ease of use and flexibility to port that content all over the home with Xbox 360's. It has it's issues but, for the most part it just works and works really well. My setup is with a cablecard. Not sure I will replace my dedicated WMC machine with Windows 10 if it does not come with WMC but, this would be for other computers in my home, My gaming PC, tablet and other laptop in the home. We share out tuners and can watch live TV over Wi-Fi ANYWHERE in the home and even outside the house. I like Windows 10 so far and with the free upgrade, I am tempted to upgrade them all when Win 10 hits but, with out WMC, this leaves a big issue for my family and I. Is it even possible to rip WMC from 7 or 8 to import it into Windows 10 and get it to run ? I know the OP was talking about XP MCE and from Vista+ WMC was re-written from the ground up, so that would not even apply here. I know people are saying it's dead but, if a application does what you need it to and is still supported for guide data etc, Is it really dead ? I was a Windows Media Center MVP for 2010 and 2011, I also am certified in it from Microsoft

please then explain how to make XBMC/Kodi work with an OCUR CableCard tuner device for recording copy-protected encrypted TV channels. As far as I know, WMC and TiVo are the only things that can do this.
