Do you integrated post-SP2 updates with SP2 in updates folder in the iso to install them together? apparently there are some confliction and some updates needs SP2 to be installed already so the best practice will be to include SP2 in the setup, and later install the updates independently
Yep that's exactly what I have been doing... adding the post-SP2 updates to the SP2 ISO and I can't get it to install an update free installation so you must be right with that. Just surprised because I haven't heard this at all and I have been banging my head against this for days
Renaming the updates could also help, to have the installer stage them last. (have a similar problem with .net and certain hotfixes)
WOW this entire Office 2010 Post-SP2 issue that MS created is a MESS!!! I have run so many damn tests to try and figure out whats going on and yet I am still unsure... here's an update and I hope it helps and I will try to reduce this to something that makes sense... I decided to try a clean install with JUST SP2 in the updates folder. It installed fine and when I ran WU it pretty much gave me what I expected... a bunch of missing updates. The confusing part is the MSU differs from the WHD downloads bug I figured it is probably a timing issue (release date) (pictures below) I then picked the updates that were common to both and added those to the updates folder. Sure enough when I installed it and ran WU it showed that SP1 was missing... (the attached text shows the list after the 1st WU run with just SP2. Items marked missing were not in the WHD downloads so I skipped those and just added the others that were common to both WU & WHD) View attachment 27491 View attachment 27492 Spoiler Definition KB982726 Excel 2010 KB2826033 MISSING KB2553284 KB2687423 KB2760781 MISSING KB2826023 MISSING KB2826035 MISSING KB2850016 Outlook 2010 KB2837597 MISSING Word 2010 KB2863902 MISSING Access 2010 KB2553446 Filter Pack 2.0 KB2810071 InfoPath 2010 KB2817369 InfoPath 2010 KB2817396 KB2553092 MISSING KB2589298 KB2589352 KB2589375 KB2597087 KB2760598 KB2794737 KB2825640 KB2837583 MISSING KB2850079 OneNote 2010 KB2837595 Outlook 2010 KB2687567 MISSING PowerPoint 2010 KB2553145 PowerPoint 2010 KB2775360 MISSING SharePoint Workspace 2010 KB2760601 Visio Viewer 2010 KB2810066 EDITatch Tues. just changed the following 2 updates: Filter Pack 2.0 KB2810071 X and KB2850079 X
Based on this info and the testing I had done so far I decided to install just office with SP2 and THEN go to WU and install the updates in 2 passes... 1 the items common to both and 2 all others. I'm surprised that you considered this confusing you know that WHD lists rely on newest hotfixes (hence the app name ), so the difference with WU/MU will occur definitely because MU doesn't consider or offer hotfixes. but the nice about Office updates in WU, is that it's check for the installed updates version and calculate what you need meaning if you installed the latest hotfixes, it won't ask you to install older superseded updates so, if you want to know the actual difference, just install Office with SP2 then WHD's updates, and see what's comes in MU then you can sore and rename the .msp files accordingly
You answer made me smile and giggle after a long days work trying to sort this out... but your right I'm really just confused at the difficulty here and not the different offerings between WHD and WU I actually noticed exactly what you said about the WU for office... it had me download 31 updates but when I did an "install" it installed 28 and actually said that 3 were not needed.. that was actually pretty cool. Regarding your last comment I would much prefer to use the WHD hotfixes but they definitely have a timing issue with SP2 that I have yet to figure out which means I can't do a simple unattended install in a single step. What I have managed to complete though is adding all the WU hotfixes, including those released today, in the updates folder, and it all installs perfectly. I renamed them all to follow the same install sequence that the WU log showed. UPDATE: I installed Office with just SP2 and then used Burf's Installer For Office Updates v5 to install all the new office updates. I ran WU and nothing showed. I am going to run a few more tests but this may change the way I do my installations.
Try programing to launch the msp updates installer after setup finishes via Microsoft OCT (setup /admin)
I never thought of that... what an excellent idea!!! EDIT: I just tried once again a new office install with SP2 and all the updates... sure enough it doesn't like it... (see pic) I am now trying Rick's suggestion and this will change the way I do my Office installs for sure. View attachment 27524
@ compstuff I did multiple tests to narrow down the updates and finaly made it happen. First of all MS did something stupid with the proof updates as they are not cumulative. Second thing is the updatelist for Office2010x86 post SP2 isn't accurate. From the current list only 21 of them are needed and 10 more that are missing from list (21+10=31 that WU shows). Now to overcome the stupid MS thing we need to use proof files from SP2 and two KBs (kb2760781 and kb2863818) in the order the appeared. So we need to rename them as proof1, proof2, proof3 so they install in that order. With this View attachment 27529 from View attachment 27530 and SP2 content WU shows nothing to download
I downloaded Office 2010 SP2 and extracted it as MSP files. But I noticed there's a lot of proof-xx-xx, where xx-xx are a lot of different languages not related to Spanish which is the language I need. Those files have a huge overall size, thus can I safely delete them?
Well of course nothing is easy with this... I can't get the script to work correctly when called from OCT. To test I added 3 scripts 1) MD C:\T1 2) Burf's with no pause and a simple MD c:\T2 at the beginning 3) MD C:\T3 All 3 directories are made but the updates never install... I don't see anything in the event viewer that helps me with this.
I have wondered the same thing... I believe you need the en, es, and fr but wondered about the others
