Hey guys. So I have this issue where I power on or reboot my pc and once I log in, I get nothing but desktop or explorer crashes. This has been happening to me on the latest dev build (25163.1000) and the previous 5 builds. In this state, I am unable to see anything on the desktop and the only way I can resolve the issue is to CTRL-ALT-DEL and open task manager, then CMD.

I am on a Dell Latitude 5420. All drivers are up to date.

I managed to get ViveTool installed and tried disabling tabs and the new nav after a few hours of troubleshooting. What I found was that disabling the new Nav panel resolves the issue until my next power cycle. It's at this point the new nav panel re-enables and the crashes from hell start again.

Here is the ViveTool code i am running to disable the nav: vivetool /disable /id:36354489

I've done searching for weeks and have not seen this mentioned anywhere so now I am at desperation on how to either keep this off all of the time or figure out how to actually fix the crashes.

Of course, its a dev build designed to be replaced by the next dev build.

See....I learned that from Enthusiast...I had a feeling...This is another dumb question, but why would someone want to use a build that is (as you would say) "Time Bombed"

Err, for testing new features and hunting bugs (Dev builds do not belong to any specific branch)? In the Dev channel, normal updates are rare and if there are any, they mostly don't do anything but testing the delivery method. Otherwise, just upgrade from one Dev build to the next (time limit will be periodically extended). Fast paced, living on the edge (no pun intended).

From your question, this channel definitely is not for you. Beta channel (currently 22622) and Release Preview* channel (currently 22621) both belong to a specific release and are not timebombed. Updates arrive the normal way. More your cup of tea, I guess.

    * (Don't confuse with the Preview updates which occur in almost all branches. It's clearly a misnomer and creates confusion.)

I use these to help MS fix stuff that is busted. I have a few test systems that aren't used for anything other than testing stuff.

If you only have 1 system the easy fix for this is to install these dev builds in a VM, which can be done for free. A lot of the people here running dev builds are installing them in VMs.
