Microsoft has always been bad at choosing names.
They must take a lesson from Android ( Google )

    • Alpha (1.0)
    • Beta (1.1)
    • Cupcake (1.5)
    • Donut (1.6)
    • Eclair (2.0–2.1)
    • Froyo (2.2–2.2.3)
    • Gingerbread (2.3–2.3.7)
    • Honeycomb (3.0–3.2.6)
    • Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0–4.0.4)
    • Jelly Bean (4.1–4.3.1)
    • KitKat (4.4–4.4.4, 4.4W–4.4W.2)
    • Lollipop (5.0–5.1)

    What we have here:

    1. Longhorn
    2. Spartan
    3. Threshold
    4. Halo
    5. Cortana
    6. Blue
    7. Halo

    MS needs young, creative marketers

But Windows 10 is a long-term service. Maybe the Windows 10 would end up being opensource and the Redstone would be a paid OS.

I'm all but an Ubuntu zealot, but whats wrong in that scheme?

(excluding the first releases) They are some imaginary animals sorted in in alphabetical order, just like the sweets chosen later by Google.

P.S. I bet android 5.x/6 will be called Marshmallows

That one is good too.

But given that, on a Smartphone the Smarties are better suited than M&Ms (they comes also from Nestlé, like Kitkat), and f**k the alphabetical order :D

They don't really compare as the Android ones are from a single product, while the Microsoft ones you named all refer to different stuff. The Android scheme is like naming hurricanes, the Microsoft scheme usually was to choose a codename that has some relation to the product being build. For example, Longhorn is a bar on the road from Whistler to Blackcomb (both ski-resorts), which made sense as it was planned as an interim Windows release between Whistler and Blackcomb. As for Spartan, I suspect that refers to the "spartan" user experience of the browser. Cortana... well, that doesn't need much explanation. The Microsoft ones at least have some flair, the Android ones are just silly kindergarten jokes IMO.

I think they are all code names, and as such they can call it what they want to. I couldn't care less if the internal code name was "Rhinoceros Butt", so long I'm not using the Rhino Butt OS when its released, lol. However, once it does go final I think they all should be dated. I particularly like the way Ubuntu does it, a.k.a 14.10, 15.04 etc. In fact, I wish Microsoft did exactly this in a specific Month every year.
