I use StrongVPN as my VPN service and it seems that I had downloaded a file in the past for which someone has filed a complaint to StrongVPN and they sent me a warning that if I continue to do so, they will suspend my account.

1- What the heck? what's the point of using a VPN then?
2- How did the owner of that video know when it was shared through torrents?
3- What shall I do to prevent anyone from tracking me?

    Email for your reference:

    lmmfao .. sorry...

well the good news is, the complainant made the complaint to your vpn provider and not to your isp, had it been to your isp that would mean your vpn sucks monkey intestines from a snails backside... Although your VPN DOES keep logs so get a new one.

    What to do, nm http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?p=35962080

    1) how come StrongVPN's management told me the case is now over and this is just a warning but further complaints will lead to the suspension of my account, yet when I asked them how come you say it's a warning yet the case for settlement of $750 USD is open? the manager told me to ignore it. But I am scared because in that case page of DMCA, it says I need to settle the amount by the 15th of February 2014??

    2) If I download torrents without connecting to my VPN, though my ISP that is, will I get a warning from my ISP? I have never heard of such thing in all the 15 years I have used the internet until today

    3) how come they know it's me because of my VPN? if I was using my regular connection, couldn't they have contacted my ISP in Dubai?

the VPN is being complained to, you are not. Simple enough. Your vpn is saying stop now probably because its against their TOS, or they will forward all to you. leave it go, stop the porn (For gods sake man 10000000000000000000000 people already do, why add more!?!!).

going straight though ISP will most likely get you a court hearing AND OR suspend your ISP account or terminate.

thanks a lot man. I feel better now. I will stop this crap.

Can we be sued the same way for downloading Windows 8 ISOs from each other as well? or is that just for copyright material?

Downloading isn't as big of the issue as seeding(uploading). But with a vpn that does not keep logs, there isn't an issue. The swarm would see the vpn. Problem with that is seeding on a paid vpn is expensive and seeding with a free vpn is a waste of time since most will cut you off at a certain bandwidth or throttle you.

yeah I don't want to seed anything just to download, but I guess you can't do that right? otherwise your download will be capped.

Speaking of which, what do you think of http://www.securitykiss.com/ ?

same problem as well Ill face with them?

what is a good VPN outside the USA that doesn't keep logs and is meant for these kinda things?

security kiss is actually pretty good, but they have limits like everyone else. Make use of MAGNETS, much safer than torrents, the main reason TPB switched their default to magnet instead of torrent.

    Forget it.....
The entire problem is that THEY first and mostly violate your privacy to get your home address....
(Somebody probably unveiled the IP owner without legality.)
Then they are sending their lawyers to you making you to be the bad guy, because you have downloaded copyright material which is a crime. Most even pay because they are scared.
They made a crime to uncover your crime so to say...

The peer-to-peer networks are observed by such money making lawyers....their one and only job is to record IPs.....and to earn money. The 'IP chain' always ends at your ISP.

When those lawyers can prove a full download then they ask the copyright owner if he wants to go after the one....
If the owner says yes, then the lawyers are trying to get the IP owner's home address asking the providers.
The PROVIDERS then are violating privacy handing out the home addresses!!!

Depending on which country the ISP is situated, the ISP MUST store the logs....and at some countries only a judge can (legally) order to unveil the IP owner...

To download movies through peer-to-peer is the most stupid thing one could do.
Inform yourself about your local laws....also about streaming....streaming is no download and is a grey area at some countries....if you want to watch movies get a streaming portal.
    There are hundreds already...

I have heard from friends happening the same..wasn't porn, though, lol....
All they had in common was to have used bit-torrent to download a movie....

In my country THEY would have to prove that my ip address was involved in illegal activity before even getting court order for ISP to disclose my identity. The whole DMCA bulls**t is nothing but serious human rights violation. God bless America.

Yes, no country should have ever signed it. The governments should be mature enough to have their own laws and not to offer to the US the status of a world police.
But the point actually is that providers are handing out data just to want not to be bothered.

The word DMCA makes them to obey like a dog, even though there are clear local laws under which circumstances they are allowed to hand out the home address.
Ignorance and fear makes most people to pay anyway, because they cannot afford a lawyer by themselves.
Either way you have to pay if they keep at it.

DMCA has become a real issue of abuse. Just write an email to a site owner where you want to have removed some contents....make an official (fake) email from a huge US company lawyer and have a look if they follow your request....I bet most will...

I have been downloading both movie and software torrents for at least 15 years now and have yet to have this happen to me.

Used to download torrents with Peer Block in conjunction with my torrent client which works pretty good. These days I use a free VPN Client called SoftEther.

I think both magnet link and torrent file are same.Only difference is that magnet link needs to first download torrent file from peers.TPB used magnetic links to save space.
And your vpn protected you otherwise your isp would have been served court notice and hence to you.Nothing is safe with torrents. It dependens upon your vpn, seedbox or streaming(leeching) site provider.Pick providers from safer countries i.e that has strong laws to protect privacy and will not reveal your IP easily. Also private trackers are more safe than public torrents.
