Does installation Id change after reinstalling Windows? In other words is it possible to use the confirmation ID I got after clean install of Windows?
Yes it does change.... but some confirmed that there old confirmation ID worked for them, I am not sure about this.
I forgot to write down my confirmation ID before entering it at Windows. So is there anyway to extract it from my system?
open command prompt type Code: slmgr /dlv and then CTRL+C will copy the popped up screen, paste it into your notepad and back up. -ed- oops you said confirmation ID. sorry
I can confirm that the installation ID does change and that the old confirmation ID does reactivate Windows 8.1. I had to do a reinstall of my windows 8.1 and reused the confirmation ID, I had written down from a previous call to MS using skype.
I don't know how you can confirm this, since you are wrong on both points. Or perhaps exactly because the two mistakes cancel each other. The installation ID does NOT change if you reinstall Windows 8 or 8.1 on the exact same PC, provided that there was no alteration whatsoever to the hardware (i.e. motherboard, harddisk, CPU, RAM etc. are all still the same). This has been tested and confirmed numerous times. The confirmation ID is specific to the installation ID. If the installation ID has changed, then a confirmation ID corresponding to a previous installation ID will not be accepted. Is it possible that, in the scenario you described, your installation ID didn't in fact change? That would explain how your old confirmation ID was still accepted.
Install ID does change.. If on same Hardware with no change, installation ID does not change then on VM Id should be same every time i reinstall those(not new creation). But its not the case they change, even HDD partitioning & formatting can change that, new driver can.....
I think it has to do with DISKID / VolumeID as well. - If you just wipe the partition and the informations will remain the same that you might have the same ID. But if you clean the disk and recreate parititons and so on, than the information changes and as a result of this your Install ID
I haven't tested on VMWare in that much detail. You must of course make sure that hardware UUID and MAC address are matched. As far as I remember, VMWare uses SCSI HDD by default, which is not included in the construction of the Installation ID.
yes i used same UUID & MAC(I know this)...Its really very confusing that what in actual count towards this(voting). No clear picture for win8...
Very easy. Type "slui 4" at the command prompt, and follow the instructions. Call up Microsoft's automated service, type in your installation ID, and you get told your confirmation ID.
For my case Installation ID didn't change, All I did is wiping the same partition where Windows 8.0 Pro were installed, installed Windows 8.1 Pro, put the same key and surprisingly the Installation/Confirmation IDs were the same as Win8.0.
