Just try it to see if you like it or not, maybe it works better for your machine, maybe not. Most distro's has issues on mine and my machine is from 2011 As for the use, it's not the same as windows. Windows has installers while linux has a more complex system when you don't use the market, installing apps is sometimes a big pain. Try to install your video card for sample, i need to do alot of things on my machine to get it to run properly, while on windows it only took a few seconds. Windows: 1. Download driver 2. Install driver Linux: Download the Nvidia driver and move it to your “/home/user-name” directory. For example, we will use the driver package NVIDIA-Linux-x86-331.67.run. Rename it “N-331.67.run”, so you don't have to type that long name later. Install the package “libc6-dev” by opening the Terminal and typing: sudo apt-get install libc6-dev Then type this command to create a file named “disable-nouveau.conf”: gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/disable-nouveau.conf Add these two lines to the opened file: blacklist nouveau options nouveau modeset=0 Save the file. In the Terminal type this command: sudo update-initramfs -u Reboot. Enter the virtual console tty1 by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1. Log in and type this command to stop the display manager: sudo service mdm stop Sometimes you may now see a different screen. Just press Ctrl+Alt+F1 again. Then type: sudo sh N-331.67.run Ignore the message about the "pre-install script failed!" Always choose “yes” during the installation, and when it's finished type: sudo service mdm start
OM ***F*** G !!!!!! I knew Linux used commands for everything... But this is just !!! No offense , but all that just to install a (puny) Driver !! Unbelievable.. phew ..
Spoiler Seriously, I'll have to try and learn them (Linux) before M$ gets strict with the Windows licensing. hahahaha.... LOL
I agree... it's basically a mindset change for most people - firstly to forget windows operations, then to not think of the old way of Linux (as commandline driven)... Easier to use Synaptics, Software Manager etc... commands are used more than in windows, but it still is not the main operating method. If you have a good idea about kernel/driver compatibility, then by all means install those, otherwise stick with the distributed stuff...
Rebecca Updates Latest Level 1 (mint-meta-core) update contains a grub-2 update - thus if if you have Burg installed it will prompt to overwrite it - you can accept as Burg is compatible with this update - just run ... sudo burg-install "(hd0)" (obviously select whichever partition you have boot installed) - If anybody notices any package/applet conflicts, please let us know
LiveCD has generic drivers... you need to install so that it can download the correct graphics drivers for you.
Almost Linux OS take all that need from the Internet during the installation. That is the reason for Linux to be connected from the installation begining.
