I am trying to install graphics drivers on my desktop. The only way I can install the drivers is to unplug my hdmi cable from my tv. I tried that and then hooking up the cable to the tv but when i do that i lose all the icons and my mouse pointer.

The only way i get the icons back is to unplug HDMI cable from the tv. How can I fix this?

    thx

It sort of sounds like the hdmi output is being switched to (used as) a second monitor and your desktop is visible on the first monitor (which would be the vga output of the graphics card).

Do you have a vga monitor to try and see if that is what's happening?

When i go into display i don't even see my tv listed. That is part of the tissue. When I had it on windows 8 it worked perfectly but not on 8.1.

Might i ask what card and drivers you're talking about.

when you unplug the hdmi cable to get the icons back........... where are you seeing the icons? do you have another monitor hooked up also?

please explain what your entire setup is.. also for the drivers are you installing -- you don't have a 64bit system? you linked the 32bit drivers.... just checking..

when you have your hdmi plugged in, try start > run > "%windir%\System32\DisplaySwitch.exe /clone" without the quotes and see what happens to the hdmi tv display.... "/extend" will return it back to the default function of dual monitors

Some weird things might arise with drivers. Recently I had to re-format and re-install everything due to a corrupted audio driver sound installations after several updates done through time.
Sometimes isn't worth the pain the hassle the frustration the time you go through when trying to fix them.

ok, have hdmi plugged in and have access to desktop monitor with icons. Still cant see tv listed under control panel>display. Was working fine in win 8 but updated to 8.1 and this all started.

    Any ideas?

Did you install the latest drivers before or after you upgraded to 8.1?

Do it again, but this time use updated drivers downloaded from vendor website not CD ones.

Yes a fresh one. Do it then update via WU your system then install video driver (updated ones not CD), don't forget to unplug HDMI cable to perform all said. After you can see your system as stable then plug in HDMI cable.

It was a fresh install of 8.1. If i have to install a new OS it will be 8 not 8.1.

When I turn my tv to hdmi2 which is hooked up to my pc it says nothing is connected. Bad hdmi cable? It is brand new.

Doesn't matter is brand new, it could be defective yet. However, I bet your cable isn't the source of your issues. Go back to Win8 (fresh install) install updated drivers not CD ones.

if it was working at this point ------ then what did you do that made it work?

why do you need to to be listed in display?

and when it's not working what is on the screen? do you see a blank desktop or just the black/whatever color tv screen like there is no input?

are you turning the pc on before turning on the tv? the pc has to be on before the tv so the hdmi connection can authorize properly.. only seen this happen once at a friends house, turned the tv on first and had no display because the hdmi did not get initilized/authorized/whatever, had to unplug the hdmi cable and plug it in again to get it to actually "connect"

did nothing to get icons and desktop to work, it just did. Need to see it on display to change it from duplicate or whatever the other options that are there. Probs turning on before tv. Does it matter?
