Hello all! I just registered here so I can ask this question. Pardon my English. Last week I sadly dropped my laptop (an HP netbook). It wasn't from very high but it was enough to get the hard drive killed, the computer doesn't recognize it. So I'm going to buy a new hard drive (I'm assuming any 2.5" will work). The problem is the computer didn't have any Windows disk when I bought it, and it doesn't even have a DVD/CD drive, so I guess I'll have to download windows and install it from a USB stick (not sure how to do that). It's Windows 7 Starter, as you can see here: dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/24660524/WINDOWS%207%20STARTER.jpg So I guess I need to download exactly this Windows version. I've been looking at this thread: forums.mydigitallife.net/threads/14709-Windows-7-Digital-River-direct-links-Multiple-Languages-X86-amp-X64 but none of the links are for Windows 7 Starter. How can I do it, then? Picture of the dead HDD: dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/24660524/DEAD%20HDD.jpg Picture of system information of the netbook: dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/24660524/NETBOOK%20SYSTEM%20INFORMATION.jpg So, in short, I need to download this exact Windows 7 Starter version so I can install it legally on the netbook (using my Product Key) from a USB stick (right?). Any help will be appreciated.
Thank you, guys. It's been a while since you responded. I finally got a new HDD and successfully put it in the netbook. I've been having some problems to download the Windows editions you linked, it seems my browser (Chrome) wasn't downloading them fully, so all I was getting was corrupt files. But now I've finally been able to successfully download the version that Tito linked. I just installed it but, of course, it says my Product Key does not match the SKU, or something like that. I kinda understand why this happens, though, I'm trying to use a Starter product key on an Ultimate installation, that's just not logical. I did use the ei.cfg removal tool that you guys linked and it seemed to work, it said the file was removed from the ISO. But then, at the installation, I didn't see any option to choose a particular edition, I didn't see any edition unlocking at all. Did I miss that option? What I am doing wrong? How can I install the edition that I want so I can use my Product Key? Maybe I should've used steven4554's edition? Sorry, I'm a total ignorant at this stuff...
Interesting info, Carlos, thanks. Weird, I didn't get that selection screen... maybe the ei.cfg removal didn't work... I'll try again. The second part of your post is all new information to me. I understand I'll have to download a software called Daz Windows Loader and run it, right? And about SLIC 2.1... I must already have that in my BIOS, right?
@EFA11: If there's SLIC 2.1 in BIOS, no reboot needed. The actual bootloader installation is skipped.
when u remove ei.cfg from iso with tool.. when u make USB it puts it back in.. in the USB u have to remove it after making it... DVD is ok 1 time in iso removal.
..because ultimate on a netbook is a suicide. But starter is very limited, so, I got the same problem, and I decided to install Windows 7 Thin Pc. Working Great. But Is only to have some application compatibility, Linu (in that case, xubuntu), the best way.
If they want it, they can install it after purchase. But it may seem 'dodgy' selling a Netbook that has a licence for Starter, with another version of the OS.
