Maybe this is news to you, but some people, and they are not the stupid ones, refuse to agree that newer is better and better is necessary. If something works perfectly for 12 years for someone, that why should that person make changes, just because M$ wants to sell things? A rather strange commentary on a blog like this, if I may say so?
Until I can get some issues resolved which have prevented me from installing my new motherboard, I plan to continue using XP. Once those are ironed out, I'll reluctantly switch to 8.1. I agree with Hannibal Lecter two posts up. Microsoft could update XP or any of its OSes to continually improve it, but that doesn't make the same kind of money as forcing people to buy a new OS.
Have you tried installing modern software on Win 98se or Win 2000 or Win ME ? Things don't work properly any more - websites don't render correctly, software no longer supports the OS because it is just too much work to code in compatibility in new software for legacy OS's Same is happening with XP, already software does not support it any more, its old, very very old, it would be a complete headache and possibly impossible for all developers to keep adding support for XP when their software is designed to run on 7/8/8.1 MS dropped IE support from XP, WMP too iirc, they can't keep new software running perfectly on modern OS's while still keeping compatibility for legacy, it breaks things and causes unnecessary problems And yes, in this case newer is WAY better - 7 is the new XP - if you want to stick with XP then fine stick with it, but that is your choice and you choose to take the risks in doing so It's MS's OS, their decision to move on, I think they have been patient enough with the "stuck in the past sticklers" who refuse to move on because they are scared of trying something new MS even included XP Mode for Windows 7, there is no excuse to still have XP as a main OS, even huge companies have had WAY too long to upgrade XP is dead, let it die in peace
it doesn't work "perfectly fine" when there are numerous documented unresolved vulnerabilities because either microsoft doesn't care or because they can't care as it requires too much code rewrite as they have claimed which breaks many other portions of the OS as well as compatibility with software there is ZERO reason to use XP today unless either you have: ancient POS hardware that won't run right with 7 (you can try Win ThinPC or install 7 Starter to see how it runs) or you have important ancient POS software that only works properly in XP... in that case, virtualize it under 7, it comes free with Pro/Ultimate/Enterprise Editions!
Are you guys actually swallowing Microsoft's line? What do you think Win7 and 8 are? Complete rewrites of the Windows code? They're just Win95 with additions and modifications, like every flavor since 95 has been. So if Win7 and 8 didn't break the code, simply upgrading XP wouldn't have, either.
As you probably already know, these are the latest (the last?) updates: Security Update for Windows XP (KB2922229) Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - April 2014 (KB890830) Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP (KB2936068)
I'm doing the absolutely second-to-last set of updates on my old XPooter as I type. I know XP is behind the times. I like my new W7 pooter a LOT. It's a smooth running OS even on this slightly out of date box and I enjoy the shiny eye candy that I can turn on and off and play with at will. But I want at least one pooter running XP in the house for any reason I please, or for no reason at all...for a very VERY long time to come.
just some lose thoughts. yes, 7 is way better than xp, no doubt about it. but in my business you sometimes still need to run xp to use some expensive [ legal ] software that has bugs in w7 that are not acceptable. that said, i saw a remark by daz in the chatbox recently, pointing out that once the core is flawed it is a risk. wisdom.. as for myself, i still use an xp lappy for chat and news... if it gets nuked, no problem. no sensitive data anyware.. so why give myself a headache and put 7 [ or worse!] on it, i wonder? if it aint broke don`t fix it.. as for the line from 3.11 - 95 - nt -xp and farther, i think we must beware of oversimplifying things.. 95 is not xp.... you could still run it from dos...
I don't know if you're referring to my post on the previous page, but if you are, my point is only that Microsoft is selling new versions of Windows based upon original Windows code. They could have chosen to issue those new versions as service packs to the flawed, bug-ridden Windows people paid good money for, or they could greedily sell them as new versions of Windows. Gates didn't get rich by doing the right thing.
