Yes, this does work. Has worked for a long time (Although not a lot of people know about it surprisingly, and I'm sure that's for the better). A small note, as of version 4, you have to go into safe mode to make the registry changes. Also, on occasion it will start asking for a username/password when trying to update. Just go back and select one of the initially entered update servers (u36 through somewhere near u65 are all valid), update, then set back to Choose Automatically.
I did this a while back on WinXp on version 3.0684x86. yes it update and works but not try it on Vista 64 /Win7 x64 bit tho'. I am now using Avast win 7 x64
Works fine on XP (x86 & x64), Vista (x86 & x64), and 7 (x86 & x64). And despite what people have posted, the latest (4.0.437) works fine on 7.

Cool, I was beginning to wonder if anyone else knew about this tip!! I have been using this to update my ESET Smart Securities for over a year now (updating software versions periodically and re-doing it) and was able to do this even with the latest version 4.0.467.0 with Vista x86. But I have just recently upgraded to Windows 7 and have tried to re-do it but for some reason the software will not update with ANY of the trial servers (It says Update is not necessary, but the virus signature doesn't change....). So my software won't update signatures, doesn't start the "Trial" and even though I've tried doing the registry fix already, it's useless because it won't update. Is anyone else with Win7 experiencing this???? Any suggestions as to how I can get around this? I really want my ESET back..
Eset update servers get this way from time to time. I think someone forget to feed the hamsters or something . Just recently I was trying to update my ESS manually...wouldn't do it. Tried many times, kept saying same as you...Update not neccessary blah blah...finally after almost a week, it updated. I think they just have crappy update servers. .
